The 8020D is a compact bi-amplified nearfield monitor from Genelec and the latest revision of a design whose roots go back more than 15 years. Compared with the 8020C it replaces, Genelec quotes higher output together with lower energy consumption. Its manual mentions home studios, multimedia systems, use with computer soundcards, surround set-ups, outside broadcast vehicles and radio or television control rooms, besides nearfield monitoring.
Key specs that matter
The two-way layout pairs a 105 mm bass cone with a 19 mm metal dome tweeter, each driven by its own 50 W Class D amplifier, and the active crossover sits at 3000 Hz. Response runs from 56 Hz to 25 kHz at the -6 dB points and holds ±2.5 dB between 62 Hz and 20 kHz. Peak output for a pair at 1 m is 107 dB or more, short-term maximum 100 dB or more and long-term maximum 93 dB or more. Harmonic distortion is 3 percent or less from 50 to 200 Hz and 0.5 percent or less above 200 Hz, and self-generated noise is 5 dB SPL or lower at 1 m. The speaker is 242 mm high including its Iso-Pod, 148 mm wide and 142 mm deep, and it weighs 3.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
Die-cast aluminium forms the Minimum Diffraction Enclosure, which is shaped against edge diffraction and also provides EMC shielding. A Directivity Control Waveguide frames the tweeter and a reflex port vents the bass section. Audio enters through a balanced female XLR at 10 kOhm, and a rotary control on the back panel sets input sensitivity. The mains input accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50 to 60 Hz. With the ISS switch on, the speaker falls into standby at typically under 0.5 W after playback stops and restarts when a signal appears, idle draw is 3 W or less and full output needs 60 W. The Iso-Pod stand decouples the cabinet from its surface and tilts it by up to 15 degrees, M6 points take wall and ceiling brackets, and a 3/8 inch thread in the base suits microphone stands. Genelec asks for at least 3 cm of free space behind, above and beside the speaker so the amplifier can cool and the port can work, with the surrounding air kept below 35 degrees Celsius. Finishes are dark grey, white, black and RAW aluminium.
Pairing
A balanced output from an interface, mixer or monitor controller feeds it directly, and an unbalanced source can be used if pin 3 is grounded to pin 1 at the source connector. Genelec warns against connecting it to the speaker outputs of a power amplifier or receiver, and a Genelec subwoofer can extend its bass response.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8030C is a larger two-way monitor with a 130 mm woofer and deeper bass extension.
