The 4010A is an extremely compact member of the 4000 series of active installation loudspeakers from Genelec, made in Finland. It is a bi-amplified two-way design intended for fixed installation in corporate AV, education, hospitality and public spaces and is rated for indoor use only. Standard finishes are black and white, and Genelec offers 120 further RAL colours to order.

Key specs that matter

Two 25 W Class D amplifiers drive a 76 mm cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter separately, with the crossover at 3.0 kHz. Response is 74 Hz to 20 kHz within 2.5 dB, and the -6 dB points are 67 Hz and 25 kHz. Short-term output reaches 96 dB SPL at 1 m and 102 dB at 0.5 m, long-term output is 91 dB, and a pair playing music peaks at 105 dB. Self-noise is under 5 dB A-weighted. The die-cast aluminium enclosure measures 181 x 121 x 115 mm and weighs 1.5 kg. Power draw is 30 W at full output, 5 W or less at idle and under 0.5 W in standby.

Engineering and use context

The MDE, or Minimum Diffraction Enclosure, has rounded edges to reduce reflections from the cabinet itself, and the DCW, or Directivity Control Waveguide, keeps on-axis and off-axis response even across a wider listening area. A reflex port supports the bass. Both amplifiers sit behind driver protection circuitry. Intelligent Signal Sensing puts the speaker into standby after about an hour without input and wakes it when a signal returns, and an ISS Disable switch hands control back to the mains switch. A Sensitivity switch drops input level by 10 dB, and with it off an input of -6 dBu produces 100 dB SPL. Tone switches offer a Treble Tilt of -2 dB above 5 kHz and a Bass Tilt of -2, -4 or -6 dB below 2 kHz. The acoustic axis sits 107 mm above the base. Each unit ships with a keyhole wall mount, a mains cable and a 3-pin plug for the signal wiring, and it can go on a microphone stand via a 3/8 inch UNC thread or on Omnimount, VESA and Sanus brackets. At least 3 cm of free space is needed behind, above and beside it for cooling and port airflow, and the ambient temperature must stay between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius with relative humidity from 20 to 90 percent.

Pairing

Signal enters through a balanced 10 kOhm Euroblock connector, so the 4010A takes a balanced line feed from a mixer, audio interface, matrix or preamplifier. It must never be connected to the outputs of a power amplifier, integrated amplifier or receiver.

The Genelec 4020C is a bigger 4000 series speaker that combines a 105 mm woofer, 50 W per driver and a 226 x 151 x 142 mm cabinet.
