British company Ophidian has expanded its S-series with the introduction of the new SKYE floorstanding loudspeakers. The new model has been developed and is manufactured in the United Kingdom, complementing the range that previously included the SEREN standmount speaker. With this model, the manufacturer is focusing on a combination of classic styling, high-quality finishing, and modern engineering solutions.

With a height of around one metre, the Ophidian SKYE belongs to the category of full-size floorstanding loudspeakers intended for use in domestic environments. The speaker features a cabinet finished in real wood veneer, with buyers offered two finish options – oak and walnut. The cabinet has been engineered with an emphasis on mechanical rigidity and the suppression of unwanted resonances, while elements of the bass reflex system also contribute to reinforcing the enclosure. As a result, the speakers are designed to integrate naturally into an interior while retaining a sense of solidity and substance.
At the core of the model is a configuration with two 180 mm drivers with metal cones operating in a D’Appolito arrangement. The tweeter is positioned between the two mid/bass drivers, allowing for a more symmetrical sound field and better integration between the drive units. The manufacturer specifically notes that the junction between the cone and the surround has been carefully optimised, which should have a positive effect on response linearity, particularly in the midrange and vocal region, where the ear is especially sensitive.

One of the key features of the Ophidian SKYE is the proprietary Aeroflex system, which represents an original implementation of bass reflex loading. According to the company, it helps make the bass faster, more precise, and better controlled, while simultaneously reducing distortion in the low-frequency range. An additional advantage of the design is said to be increased overall cabinet rigidity. As a result, the emphasis is placed not on sheer bass mass, but on clarity, structure, and confident delivery.

High frequencies are handled by a SEAS tweeter of Norwegian manufacture. It is equipped with a wide roll surround and a 22 mm dome with Sonolex damping coating. The crossover network uses Mundorf components, including air-cored coils, polypropylene capacitors, and non-inductive resistors. Such a component set is intended to ensure the cleanest possible signal transmission without unnecessary losses or coloration. The crossover itself was specifically tuned for the D’Appolito configuration in order to maintain a smooth off-axis response and provide stable tonal balance across a wide listening area.

In terms of specifications, the Ophidian SKYE demonstrates quite serious ambitions. The stated frequency response ranges from 30 Hz to 25 kHz (±3 dB), sensitivity reaches 90 dB, and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. Particularly notable is the claimed extension down to 30 Hz: for a two-way floorstanding loudspeaker in this class, such a figure looks highly impressive. To realise the speakers’ full potential, the manufacturer recommends using amplifiers rated from 50 to 250 watts.
On the UK market, the Ophidian SKYE loudspeakers are offered at a price of £3,995 per pair. Buyers can choose between two real wood veneer finishes – oak and walnut.
