iFi Audio iCan Phantom 1.5 – Headphone Amplifier with Support for Electrostatic Models

British audio manufacturer iFi Audio has introduced the iCan Phantom 1.5, an enhanced version of its flagship headphone amplifier. While the new model retains the overall design and concept of the original Phantom, it features a revised gain structure, improved compatibility with sensitive in-ear monitors, a new display, and expanded remote-control options via the Nexis app.

The amplifier still allows users to choose between a discrete Class A solid-state stage and a fully tube-based circuit built around a matched pair of General Electric 5670 valves. A Tube+ mode is also available, reducing loop gain and the amount of negative feedback to produce a warmer presentation with richer harmonic content. The gain settings have also been revised: instead of the previous 0, 9, and 18 dB values, the amplifier now offers 0, 12, and 24 dB.

iFi has also updated its IEMatch system, designed to improve compatibility with highly sensitive IEMs. Signal attenuation is rated at 12 dB for the unbalanced output and 24 dB for the balanced output. The company’s analogue sound-tuning features remain in place, including XBass with three levels of low-frequency adjustment and XSpace for modifying the perceived width of the soundstage. The built-in iESL technology can deliver up to 640 V, allowing compatible electrostatic headphones to be connected directly without a separate external energizer.

Among the most noticeable external changes are a new VU meter for real-time signal-level monitoring, a redesigned interface, and smoother operation of the volume control. The glass top panel and display now feature a fingerprint-resistant coating. Through the Nexis app, users can control the amplifier remotely, rename the device, monitor tube status, run diagnostics, and install firmware updates wirelessly. The iFi Audio iCan Phantom 1.5 is based on the company’s fully balanced True Differential Balanced PureWavePRO circuitry and is already available in Europe at a recommended retail price of €3,749.
