AVM PH 3.3 and PH 5.3 – New Phono Preamplifiers in the Evolution Series

German manufacturer AVM Audio has introduced two new phono preamplifiers in its Evolution series – the PH 3.3 and PH 5.3 – designed to work with a wide range of MM and MC cartridges. The main difference between the two models lies in the output stage: the PH 3.3 uses a low-noise transistor-based design, while the PH 5.3 features AVM’s proprietary tube output stage. According to the manufacturer, the tubes used in the flagship model are rated for a service life of several tens of thousands of hours.

In terms of functionality, the two new models are largely identical. Both feature a switchable subsonic filter, five-step gain adjustment, mono/stereo switching and phase inversion. Balanced XLR and conventional RCA outputs are provided for connection to an amplifier. Key parameters can also be adjusted remotely: the supplied aluminium RC 3 PH remote control allows users to change gain and loading settings, operate the filter and invert phase directly from the listening position.

A key feature of the AVM PH 3.3 and PH 5.3 is their modular architecture. An expansion slot on the rear panel can accommodate MC-XLR, MC-RCA or MM-RCA modules. For MC cartridges, users can choose between six gain levels and six input impedance settings, while MM cartridges can be matched using six selectable input capacitance values. This modular approach allows the phono preamplifier to be tailored to a specific cartridge and expanded with additional capabilities after purchase.

Both models are manufactured at AVM’s factory in Malsch, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The electronics are housed in a precision-made aluminium chassis with no visible mounting screws, available in silver or black brushed aluminium finishes. A hand-polished Cellini Chrome front panel is also offered as an option. The recommended retail price of the AVM PH 3.3 in Europe is €4,990, while the higher-end PH 5.3 is priced at €5,990.
