Sony has released the MDR-3R, a new version of its wired headphones that faithfully replicates the design of the original Sony MDR-3 model (which came bundled with the first Sony Walkman, the TPS-L2, in 1979).

While the Sony MDR-3R now features a USB-C interface, the iconic design remains unchanged—after all, a classic needs no improvement. The retro aesthetic has been preserved; the headphones weigh 38g and utilize a traditional adjustable metal headband with a flexible plastic insert.

The Sony MDR-3R comes with an extra set of ear pads in a different color, allowing users to choose between blue and orange accents. Like the original model, these new wired headphones feature an open-back acoustic design. According to Sony, the MDR-3R delivers clear sound and performs exceptionally well with modern music.

The ergonomics are excellent - included USD-C cable features an inline control unit with a built-in microphone, allowing users to skip tracks, adjust volume, access a voice assistant, and more. The Sony MDR-3R will be available for purchase starting in November 2026 at an accessible price point of 59 euros.
