REL Expands Its Flagship Reference Series with the No.35 and No.36 Subwoofers

British company REL has introduced two new subwoofers in its flagship Reference series – the No.35 and No.36. Their model numbers continue the brand’s anniversary tradition: the No.25 was originally launched to mark REL’s 25th anniversary, while the new models arrive as the company celebrates its 35th year. REL says the Reference series remains the fullest expression of its approach to low-frequency reproduction and is also designed for use in line arrays comprising multiple subwoofers.

One of the key technical innovations in the new models is a new AB/D amplifier topology which, according to REL, combines the high-current capability of a traditional Class A/B design with the speed and efficiency of a Class D output stage. The REL No.35 features a 12-inch bass driver, a 900 W RMS amplifier and a claimed low-frequency extension down to 17 Hz. The larger REL No.36 is equipped with a 15-inch driver, a 1,000 W amplifier and is capable of reaching as low as 15 Hz.

Both subwoofers use a high-capacity power supply built around a toroidal transformer weighing approximately 8 kg, designed to maintain stable performance during sharp dynamic peaks. The driver cones are made from carbon fibre with a finer 12K weave, combining low mass with high rigidity. An updated surround increases driver excursion while maintaining precise cone control. An optional AirShip Direct wireless module is also available, allowing High Level and .1/LFE signals to be transmitted without digital compression; both connections can be used simultaneously in stereo and home-theatre systems.

In terms of size, the REL No.35 and No.36 remain close to previous Reference models, allowing them to be integrated into existing arrays alongside the No.25, No.31 and No.32. Their cabinets feature flowing curves inspired by classic wooden motorboats and the work of Franco Serblin, while an internal bracing structure reminiscent of a ship’s frame increases cabinet rigidity. The exterior finish consists of 12 layers of lacquer, applied and polished by hand. The active REL No.35 subwoofer is priced at $10,000, while the flagship REL No.36 costs $12,000; both models are already available for purchase.
