The AT-SB727 is the current Sound Burger, a battery-powered portable record player from Audio-Technica whose original version, the AT770, appeared in 1983 and was marketed in the USA as Mister Disc. The name came back in 2022, when 7,000 red units were made for the company's 60th anniversary on November 1 and sold out at USD 199.99. On January 5, 2023, Audio-Technica announced this wider release without the commemorative plaque, in yellow, black and white, at GBP 199 or EUR 229. Compared with the 1980s model it charges over USB-C, streams by Bluetooth and uses push buttons with indicator lights in place of toggle switches.
Key specs that matter
Speed is set at 33 1/3 or 45 rpm by a high-precision DC servo motor and a belt. The platter is a die-cast aluminium alloy part with damping. Rated wow and flutter is below 0.25 percent (WTD) at 3 kHz and signal-to-noise exceeds 50 dB (DIN-B). The VM cartridge takes an ATN3600LC diamond stylus, and an ATN3600LE elliptical tip is sold as an upgrade. An internal RIAA preamp with 36 dB of gain delivers 150 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/s. The Bluetooth 5.2 transmitter works in the 2.402 to 2.480 GHz band at up to 10 mW EIRP, reaches about 10 m, supports A2DP and AVRCP, uses the SBC codec and passes 20 to 20,000 Hz. The 3.6 V lithium-ion battery gives about 12 hours of play and needs roughly the same time to recharge at 5 V and 0.5 A, drawing 1.5 W while charging. The body measures 100 mm wide, 290 mm deep and 70 mm high and weighs about 900 g.
Engineering and use context
The original AT770 ran on three C cells at 4.5 V, weighed 1.2 kg and measured 290 x 99 x 65 mm, so the reissue keeps nearly the same footprint while dropping about 300 g and replacing disposable batteries with a rechargeable cell. Running from that internal cell means the player can be used where there is no mains socket, and the fixed line-level preamp output avoids the need for a separate phono stage. Audio-Technica rates operation for ambient temperatures between 5 and 40 degrees C.
Pairing
Wireless output goes to any Bluetooth speaker or headphone with SBC. For a wired link the package contains a 3.5 mm male to dual RCA male cable, which feeds powered speakers or an amplifier line input, along with a 1.5 m USB Type-A to Type-C charging lead and a 45 rpm adapter.
Alternatives
The AT-LP60XBT-USB is a mains-powered Audio-Technica automatic turntable that adds USB recording to Bluetooth playback in a conventional plinth with a dust cover.
