The AT-LP7X is a fully manual belt-drive turntable from Audio-Technica, the Japanese company whose cartridges and tonearms date back to the 1960s. It is supplied as a complete package with tonearm, headshell, moving-magnet cartridge, built-in MM/MC phono preamplifier, dust cover, RCA cable and 45rpm adaptor, but it is also designed to let owners try other cartridges, with adjustable tonearm settings for that purpose. The finish is matte black.

Key specs that matter

A DC servo motor drives the platter by belt at 33 1/3 or 45rpm, with wow and flutter below 0.1% (WTD) and a signal-to-noise ratio above 60dB. The platter is 20mm-thick high-density acrylic on a 40mm MDF plinth. The static-balanced J-shaped aluminium arm measures 247mm effective, 15mm overhang, a maximum tracking error below 2 degrees and a tracking-force range of 0 to 4g, and accepts cartridge/headshell weights from 14 to 28.5g depending on subcounterweight. The supplied AT-VM95E cartridge with a 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical stylus is pre-mounted on an AT-LT10 headshell. The phono stage has 36dB gain for MM and 56dB for MC; phono output is 4mV and line output 252mV. The deck measures 450 x 352 x 157mm and weighs 7.6kg.

Engineering and use context

The dense MDF plinth and thick acrylic platter reduce resonance and vibration, and the platter's high rotational inertia keeps speed steady without needing a mat. The stainless-steel spindle turns on a thermoplastic sheet bearing for low friction, while an optical speed sensor monitors platter rotation and corrects the motor. The motor sits on a vibration-damping mount, and spring-based isolation feet reduce vibration reaching the deck from outside. Audio-Technica paid particular attention to chassis geometry, positioning platter, spindle and tonearm so the arm tracks laterally with minimal error across the record. The J-shaped arm, inspired by Audio-Technica designs of the 1960s and 1970s, uses a dual-axis gimbal with precision ball bearings, and it offers adjustable VTA, anti-skate, tracking force and overhang. The included 16g subcounterweight extends the usable cartridge/headshell weight to 23.5g, and an optional 32g weight takes it to 28.5g, while the detachable headshell makes swapping cartridges straightforward. The VM95E body accepts any VM95-series replacement stylus, so owners can upgrade the stylus profile without changing the cartridge.

Pairing

With the phono stage switched to line, the AT-LP7X connects to any amplifier or powered speakers. With it bypassed, the deck can feed a dedicated MM or MC phono stage, making upgrades possible later.

Alternatives

Audio-Technica's own AT-LP5X is a lower-priced direct-drive deck with a similar J-shaped tonearm and built-in phono stage.
