The AT-LP60X is the plain wired member of the entry-level LP60X family from Audio-Technica, the Japanese company founded in 1962. It replaced the long-running AT-LP60, and the main changes are a reworked tonearm base and headshell intended to improve tracking and cut resonance. Operation is fully automatic, so a record plays after one button press and the arm returns to its rest when the side ends. There is no Bluetooth or USB here, which separates it from the XBT and XBT-USB versions built on the same chassis.

Key specs that matter

A DC servo-controlled motor turns the platter via a belt at 33 1/3 or 45 rpm, and the player accepts both singles and LPs. The platter is die-cast aluminium with a felt mat on top. Audio-Technica quotes wow and flutter below 0.25 percent WTD at 3 kHz and a DIN-B weighted signal-to-noise ratio better than 50 dB. The factory-fitted AT3600L is a dual moving magnet (VM) cartridge with a 0.6 mil bonded conical diamond that tracks at a fixed 3.5 g. A built-in RIAA stage with 36 dB of gain can be switched in or out, giving 2.5 mV at the phono setting or 150 mV at the line setting, both at 1 kHz and 5 cm/s. The plinth measures 359.5 x 97.5 x 373.3 mm and the whole player weighs 2.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

Power arrives through an external AC adapter, so the AC to DC conversion happens outside the plinth rather than next to the cartridge wiring. The anti-resonance platter casting is meant to reduce ringing picked up from the chassis. Start, stop and arm return are all automatic, yet a lift button still allows manual cueing in the middle of a side. When the diamond wears out, the stylus is replaced rather than the whole cartridge, with the ATN3600LC as the standard part and an elliptical ATN3600LE also offered by Audio-Technica. The hinged lid lifts off completely, and a 45 rpm adapter is packed with the player.

Pairing

With the preamp set to line, the AT-LP60X connects directly to powered speakers, an AUX input or a computer sound card, which suits a first system without a dedicated phono input. Owners with an amplifier that already has an MM phono stage should select the phono position instead, so the signal is not equalised twice. The same turntable is also packaged by Audio-Technica as the AT-LP60XHP with headphones and as the AT-LP60X-BDL3X bundle with a pair of speakers.

Alternatives

The AT-LP60XBT keeps this mechanism and preamp and adds a Bluetooth 5.0 transmitter with aptX for wireless speakers or headphones.
