The Planar PL-2 is the larger of the two ultra-slim Planar subwoofers built by the British company REL Acoustics. REL positions the PL-2 above the PL-1, with more output, deeper reach and a wider cabinet. The range became available on 20 May 2026, and the PL-2 lists at USD 3,299.
Key specs that matter
One 8 inch (205 mm) FlatPiston long-throw driver on a steel chassis fires forward, supported by a 10 inch (250 mm) FibreAlloy passive radiator on the back. The Pure Class D amplifier is rated at 550 W RMS, a figure REL calls conservative, since it delivers 600 W under demanding test conditions. In-room extension is -6 dB at 24 Hz. The cabinet measures 650 mm across, 480 mm tall and 144 mm deep, with a further 39 mm for the wall bracket, and weighs 20.25 kg net, or 28 kg packed. Connections comprise a Speakon High Level socket supplied with a 1.5 m lead, a Low Level RCA pair and an LFE RCA input.
Engineering and use context
The FlatPiston driver was developed only for Planar, with the aim of getting high output from a cabinet thinner than 6 inches. The passive radiator points toward the wall behind the unit, and REL relies on boundary effect coupling so that the wall reinforces the lowest frequencies. Brackets carry VIMAR isolation, which cuts the transfer of cabinet vibration into the wall. An AirShip Direct wireless receiver is part of the design from the start, so the subwoofer needs only a mains cable at its position. When wall mounting is not an option, an optional Planar Cart lets it stand in the room while keeping the same rear-wall orientation. Protection circuits guard against DC faults and shorted outputs and include a set-safe stage, and the power supply is switchable between 100 and 240 V. Owners can pick black or white gloss lacquer, with a cloth grille in the box and a wood grille as an upgrade.
Pairing
Through the High Level input the PL-2 follows the output of the stereo amplifier directly, so it receives the same signal as the main speakers. In a home cinema an AV receiver or processor sends its LFE channel to the dedicated RCA input, and the flat cabinet can hang on the wall near a screen, where a conventional box subwoofer would take up floor space. REL aims the PL-2 at bigger rooms and more demanding systems than the smaller model can serve.
Alternatives
The REL Planar PL-1 uses twin 6.5 inch drivers with 300 W in a narrower 522 mm cabinet weighing 18.9 kg.
