The REL No.36 is the 15 inch model of the Reference subwoofer range from the British maker, launched in September 2026 alongside the 12 inch No.35. Its cabinet keeps the dimensions of earlier 15 inch Reference models, so it can join existing arrays, and the launch price was USD 12,000 or GBP 11,000, with preorders opening on 22 September 2026. The shipping carton measures 987 x 768 x 932 mm.
Key specs that matter
The 380 mm long-throw Pure Carbon Fibre driver, fitted with a carbon fibre centre cap in inverted form, is powered by a 1,000 W RMS amplifier. REL gives in-room extension of minus 6 dB at 15 Hz. The enclosure is a closed, front-firing design measuring 743 x 541 x 816 mm (W x H x D), weighing 91.8 kg net, or 105.7 kg packed. Inputs cover high level signals on Neutrik SpeakOn, low level stereo on RCA or XLR and LFE on RCA or XLR, while outputs pass high level, LFE and line signals on to further subwoofers.
Engineering and use context
The driver has been refined to cut cone noise and allow greater travel than before. The amplifier uses the new Class AB/D arrangement, in which an ultra high-current power supply of the traditional linear kind feeds a Class D output stage, so the efficiency of switching amplification is backed by the current reserves of a linear supply. Electronic protection watches for DC faults and output short circuits. Owners set gain, crossover, LFE level, phase and the dual parametric EQ from the supplied Reference remote rather than from controls on the back. The finish is piano black lacquer built up in 12 hand-rubbed coats, and the curvilinear body, modelled on classic wooden runabouts, carries carbon fibre accents, triple-plated stainless steel handles and a sculpted grille that follows the cabinet lines.
Pairing
Given its mass and depth of more than 80 cm, the No.36 suits larger rooms where a single unit or a pair stays in position. The SpeakOn high level connection taps the signal from the main power amplifier so the subwoofer tracks the character of the stereo speakers, and the separate LFE path handles the effects channel of a cinema processor. It can be built into a Line Array together with the No.32 or with the No.25, which uses a NextGen 3 Class D amplifier, and the optional AirShip Direct transmitter provides a wireless link.
Alternatives
The REL No.32 is another model with a large carbon fibre driver and a NextGen 7 Class D amplifier.
