The T/7x occupies the centre of the three-subwoofer Serie T/x range from REL Acoustics, placed between the smaller T/5x and the larger T/9x. It is a compact powered design that pairs a front-firing driver with a down-firing passive radiator, and in North America it was priced at USD 1,099 and later USD 1,299. The cabinet volume was increased slightly over earlier T models, which gives the box a stubbier look than the equal-sided cubes that preceded it.

Key specs that matter

REL fits an 8 in. (200 mm) long-throw driver with a FibreAlloy cone, an inverted alloy centre cap and a steel chassis. Below it sits a 10 in. (250 mm) long-throw passive radiator built the same way. A 200 W RMS Class A/B amplifier drives the system, and REL rates low-frequency extension at 30 Hz at the -6 dB point. The cabinet is 356 mm wide, 320 mm high and 363 mm deep, and the subwoofer weighs 17.5 kg net. Finishes are Piano Black Lacquer and Gloss White Lacquer, each applied in five coats.

Engineering and use context

Using a passive radiator instead of a port lets the small enclosure reach lower without the air noise a reflex opening can produce, and firing the radiator toward the floor keeps the front of the cabinet visually simple. The amplifier uses MOSFET output devices in a high-current Class AB circuit with large power reserves. Vertical radius corners reduce the apparent bulk of the box, and a thick aluminium REL nameplate on the top panel also helps tune the enclosure. Solid billet aluminium feet support the cabinet. Controls cover phase, crossover frequency and gain, which is all REL provides for matching the subwoofer to the main speakers, since the design relies on placement and correct model choice rather than digital signal processing. The optional REL Arrow wireless system sends the signal to the subwoofer digitally with zero compression.

Pairing

Three inputs allow different connection routes. The high-level Neutrik Speakon input is wired to the loudspeaker outputs of the power amplifier, and REL supplies a 10 m Speakon interconnect in the box for this purpose, which means the sub is fed exactly what the main loudspeakers get. A single low-level RCA input suits preamplifiers with a line output, and a separate LFE RCA input handles the LFE feed from a surround processor or AV receiver. That combination lets one T/7x serve a stereo system and a home cinema setup at the same time, with each input set independently.

The REL T/9x is the bigger T/x sibling, using a 10-inch active driver, a more powerful amplifier and extension to 27 Hz.
