The T/9x is the top model of Serie T/x, the entry range from REL Acoustics, below Serie S and the Reference Series. It replaced the T/9i, and REL states that the new version plays louder and has more power than the previous generation while staying fast. The list price is USD 1,699, and the family also includes the T/5x and T/7x.

Key specs that matter

The active unit is a 10 inch (250 mm) long-throw FibreAlloy cone with an inverted aluminium centre cap on a steel chassis. It is joined by a 10 inch passive radiator of the same materials that fires toward the floor. The amplifier is a 300 W RMS Class A/B design, and REL quotes low-frequency extension of -6 dB at 27 Hz. The cabinet measures 370 mm wide, 340 mm high and 393 mm deep, and its net weight is 20.6 kg, or 23 kg in its 506 x 460 x 465 mm carton. Signal enters through a Speakon connector for speaker-level feed, one RCA for Low Level and one RCA for LFE. REL covers parts and labour for 3 years.

Engineering and use context

For the x generation REL changed the enclosure to hold more internal air, which gives the driver more acoustic volume for efficiency and output, while gently rounded corner radii reduce how large the box looks. The suspension was reworked several times to cope with the extra drive. Inside the amplifier REL fitted new driver MOSFETs and improved the way the transformer is mounted. A passive radiator in place of a port means the unit does not rely on a vent for low-frequency output, and the down-firing radiator is hidden underneath. The amplifier is protected electronically against DC faults and output shorts with a set-safe circuit, with a 3.15 A fuse on 230 V supplies and 6.3 A on 115 V. Finishes are piano black and gloss white, each with five coats of hand-polished lacquer, plus a grey option. Wireless use is possible with the Arrow system, sold separately and working without compression.

Pairing

REL's High Level connection takes its feed from the speaker outputs of the main amplifier without drawing power from it, and a 10 m Speakon cable is supplied for this. That route suits stereo amplifiers and integrated models without a sub pre-out. The LFE input handles the dedicated bass channel of an AV receiver, so one subwoofer can serve music and film in the same system, and the box includes a grille and a mains lead wired for the local voltage.

The REL T/7x is the smaller model in the same series, with an 8 inch FibreAlloy driver, a 10 inch passive radiator and a 200 W Class A/B amplifier.
