The T/9x SE is a dressed-up Special Edition version of the T/9x from Serie T/x, the entry subwoofer range of REL Acoustics. It keeps the basic layout of the standard version but adds a lighter driver centre cap, a stiffer cabinet and a set of motorsport-inspired lacquer colours. The SE lists at USD 1,799 for a single unit and is also sold as a stereo pair, while the UK price is GBP 1,549 against GBP 1,399 for the regular T/9x.
Key specs that matter
Up front REL fits a 10 inch long-throw FibreCarbon cone whose inverted centre cap is also carbon fibre, mounted in a steel chassis and firing toward the listener. Beneath the cabinet a 10 inch long-throw FibreAlloy passive radiator with an inverted alloy cap fires into the floor. REL rates the MOSFET Class A/B monoblock amplifier at 300 W RMS, and low-frequency extension is -6 dB at 27 Hz. The box is 370 mm wide, 340 mm high and 393 mm deep, plus about 44 mm with the high-level plug in place, and it weighs 20.6 kg net or 23 kg shipped.
Engineering and use context
Changing the centre cap from alloy to carbon fibre takes 10 grams off the moving assembly, and REL states this results in a 1.2 dB increase in output and faster driver response. The cabinet gains extra stiffness from the finishing process developed for the limited T/9x Red edition, in which the final coat of primer is applied with great accuracy. Five lacquer colours are offered - Italian Racing Red, Le Mon Yellow, Tangerine Dream, French Racing Blue and Green With Envy. The feet and badges are chromed in a three-day process that builds up layers of copper, nickel and chrome. The amplifier uses integrated heat sinks, and its input filters work with an 8 ms response.
Pairing
The High Level input takes a Neutrik Speakon plug, and a 10 m cable is supplied to reach the speaker terminals of a stereo or integrated amplifier. A Low Level RCA input and an LFE RCA input cover preamplifier outputs and the subwoofer channel of a home cinema receiver. Rotary analogue controls on the rear set gain, crossover and LFE gain, and a phase switch selects 0 or 180 degrees. For wireless use, REL offers its Arrow system as a separate purchase, and it transmits without digital compression. Buying two units as a stereo pair gives one subwoofer for each main speaker.
Alternatives
The standard REL T/9x uses the same driver and passive radiator layout with an alloy centre cap and the same Class A/B amplifier, finished in piano black, gloss white or grey.
