The Planar PL-1 is the smaller of the two models of the REL Acoustics Planar series, a family of ultra-slim subwoofers meant to hang on a wall or stand close to one. REL made the range available from 20 May 2026, and the PL-1 lists at USD 2,499. REL positions it for small to medium rooms, leaving larger spaces to the PL-2.
Key specs that matter
Two front-firing 6.5 inch (165 mm) long-throw drivers with FibreAlloy cones on steel chassis do the active work. On the rear sits a 10 inch (250 mm) FibreAlloy passive radiator with more than 45 mm of excursion. A 300 W RMS Pure Class D amplifier drives them, and in-room response is quoted as -6 dB at 31 Hz. The cabinet measures 522 mm wide, 492 mm tall and 144 mm deep, plus 38 mm once the wall bracket is fitted, with a net weight of 18.9 kg. For signal there is a Speakon socket for the High Level feed, a Low Level RCA input and a separate LFE RCA input. The lacquer comes in black or white, both in gloss.
Engineering and use context
Planar is designed around the wall behind it. The passive radiator fires backward into that surface, and REL uses the boundary effect to reinforce low frequencies from a box too thin to hold a large driver facing forward, which is why the active load is split between two smaller cones. Mounting brackets include VIMAR, short for Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control, a REL system that limits how much cabinet energy passes into the wall. Wireless transmission is built in rather than added later - an AirShip Direct receiver ships pre-paired from the factory, so the subwoofer can work without any signal lead. Input filters remain fully analogue, and the controls are recessed so they do not stand out on the cabinet. Protection covers set-safe electronics, DC faults and output short circuits, and the mains input can be selected between 100 and 240 V. An optional Planar Cart lets the unit stand free near a wall when drilling is not wanted.
Pairing
Wired to a stereo amplifier's loudspeaker posts, the Speakon input takes no power from that amplifier, which suits systems without a subwoofer output. The LFE input accepts the bass channel of a surround receiver, and REL fits the same wireless receiver regardless of which input is used. A cloth grille is included, and a wood grille is available as an upgrade for owners who want a finish closer to furniture.
Alternatives
The REL Planar PL-2 moves to a single 8 inch FlatPiston driver, 550 W and a 24 Hz -6 dB point in a wider 650 mm cabinet.
