The F One is the entry subwoofer of the F Series from Genelec of Finland, positioned below the larger F Two. Genelec presents it as a hub for a home audio system, because it takes analogue and digital signals alike and handles the division of the signal between itself and the main loudspeakers. It is offered in black (F1BMM-6) and white (F1BWM-6), and Genelec states that it was designed to blend with any space and decor.
Key specs that matter
A single 165 mm magnetically shielded bass driver is powered by a 40 W Class D amplifier. Genelec rates the frequency response at 35 Hz to 85 Hz measured at the -6 dB points, and maximum sound pressure level at 100 dB. Self-generated noise is 15 dB SPL or lower, A-weighted. The cabinet measures 251 mm high, 305 mm wide and 305 mm deep, and the unit weighs 5.6 kg. In standby, Intelligent Signal Sensing keeps power draw at 0.5 W or less.
Engineering and use context
The connection panel carries one optical Toslink S/PDIF input, one coaxial RCA S/PDIF input at 75 ohm, a 3.5 mm analogue jack and three RCA analogue inputs for left, right and LFE. Two RCA analogue outputs feed the left and right main speakers, so the F One sits between the source and the satellites rather than on a separate branch. Automatic input detection selects the active source. Onboard active crossovers and bass management filtering send the low frequencies to the subwoofer and let the main speakers concentrate on midrange and treble. Volume can be changed with the supplied wireless remote, with an optional wired volume control, or with an existing remote after the F One has learned its IR commands. Protection circuitry is built into the amplifier section. This is an updated version of the earlier F One (A), which Genelec now lists among its previous models.
Pairing
Genelec pairs the F One with its G Series active loudspeakers and offers a ready system of two G One speakers with one F One for TV and gaming use. Because the digital inputs and the line outputs are on the subwoofer, a TV or streamer can connect straight to it, and the small G Series monitors then take the signal from its RCA outputs. Buyers with larger G Series models are directed by Genelec toward the bigger subwoofer in the range.
Alternatives
The Genelec F Two is the larger F Series subwoofer, with a 205 mm driver, a 150 W Class D amplifier and bass extension rated to 27 Hz.
