The D15s is the single 15 inch model in the D-Series of powered subwoofers from Perlisten Audio, a company started by Dan Roemer, Lars Johansen and Erik Wiederholtz, the second of whom previously worked at JBL, Harman Kardon, Klipsch and M&K Sound. The same series also contains the 12 inch D12s and the dual-driver D212s and D215s. It carries THX Dominus certification, the level that calls for up to 120 dB in rooms as large as about 184 m3, more than twice the volume set for THX Ultra. The US list price is USD 6,595.
Key specs that matter
A 380 mm driver with a carbon fiber diaphragm moves plus or minus 30 mm in its linear range. Perlisten specifies its internal amplifier at 2.0 kW RMS short term. With the THX EQ curve Perlisten gives 20 to 320 Hz at the -6 dB points and 16 to 395 Hz at -10 dB, while a Boost setting for large rooms shifts the lower -6 dB point to 16 Hz and a Cut setting for small spaces raises it to 24 Hz. Reference sensitivity is 92 dB for 150 mV at 1 m. The cabinet measures 528 x 500 x 500 mm and the subwoofer weighs 46 kg. Piano black is the only finish.
Engineering and use context
No port is used - the 133 litre box works as an acoustic suspension design, and Perlisten describes the resulting response as low Q with a shallow rolloff. The motor uses several aluminium shorting rings, large magnets, multi-layer Nomex spiders and a voice coil wound with light aluminium wire. Processing is split between a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 controller running double precision floating point math and a Texas Instruments DSP with 48-bit data paths, which together handle all functions and protection. The connection panel carries a pair of balanced XLR inputs and a pair of unbalanced RCA inputs, plus matching XLR and RCA outputs that pass the signal on without buffering. Settings are made on a 2.4 inch colour touchscreen or through an iOS and Android app, which offers a 10-band parametric EQ with three user presets. Isolation feet come fitted.
Pairing
The low pass filter can be bypassed for use with an AV processor that already handles bass management, or set between 30 and 160 Hz with slopes of 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave when fed from a stereo preamplifier. Phase is variable from 0 to 270 degrees and polarity can be inverted. Auto turn-on and a 12 V trigger are both configurable, and the pass-through outputs can feed the signal on to another subwoofer.
Alternatives
The Perlisten D12s uses a 300 mm driver and a 1.5 kW amplifier in a 448 x 420 x 450 mm cabinet weighing 41 kg.
