Perlisten Audio, an American loudspeaker company, lists the D12s as the 12 inch member of its D-Series of powered subwoofers, a range that also includes the D15s, D212s and D215s. Perlisten notes that a pair of D12s units can be certified to the THX Dominus standard.
Key specs that matter
One 300 mm driver with a carbon fibre diaphragm and plus or minus 30 mm of linear excursion works in an acoustic suspension cabinet. The built-in amplifier delivers 1.5 kW RMS on a short-term basis. In THX EQ mode response runs from 20 Hz to 289 Hz at -6 dB and from 16 Hz to 330 Hz at -10 dB. A Boost mode for large rooms moves the -6 dB point down to 16 Hz and the -10 dB point to 14 Hz, while the Cut mode for small rooms gives 25 Hz at -6 dB and 19 Hz at -10 dB. Reference sensitivity is 92 dB at 150 mV and 1 m. The cabinet measures 448 x 420 x 450 mm, weighs 41.0 kg and is finished in piano black, with grilles available as an option.
Engineering and use context
Perlisten builds the driver with a carbon fibre composite cone, several aluminium shorting rings, a very large magnet, multi-layer Nomex spiders and lightweight aluminium voice coil wire. Processing is handled by a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 processor with double precision floating point maths and a Texas Instruments DSP with 48-bit data paths. The front panel has a 2.4 inch colour LCD touchscreen, and the same settings can be reached from an iOS or Android app. Available adjustments include a 10-band parametric EQ and 3 presets for user settings, variable phase from 0 to 270 degrees, polarity selection and a low-pass filter between 30 Hz and 160 Hz with slopes from 6 dB to 24 dB per octave. The unit can switch on automatically from the signal or through a 12 V trigger.
Pairing
The rear panel accepts signals through a pair of XLR sockets and a pair of RCA jacks, so the line-level bass feed can come from a stereo preamp, an integrated amplifier with a sub output or a surround processor. Matching sets of two XLR and two RCA outputs are provided, and Perlisten specifies them as unbuffered. Auto turn-on can be told to sense XLR 1, XLR 1 and 2, RCA 1 or RCA 1 and 2, and the low-pass filter also has a bypass position for use with an external crossover.
Alternatives
The Perlisten D15s is the next single-driver model in the D-Series, with a 380 mm carbon fibre driver, a 2.0 kW RMS short-term amplifier and a sealed cabinet of 528 x 500 x 500 mm weighing 46.0 kg.
