The D212s is a dual-driver powered subwoofer in the D-Series from Perlisten Audio of Madison, Wisconsin. It was announced in June 2021 together with the D215s, D12s and D15s, and at that time carried a US price of USD 6,995. Perlisten states that its D-Series subwoofers were the first to earn THX Dominus certification. At launch buyers could choose a gloss black or gloss white cabinet, and the current finish is piano black, with grilles sold as an option.
Key specs that matter
Both 300 mm drivers use carbon fiber composite diaphragms, and their linear travel reaches 30 mm in either direction. The internal amplifier is rated at 3.0 kW RMS short term. On the THX EQ curve the maker quotes 20 to 231 Hz at -6 dB and 16 to 245 Hz at -10 dB, the Boost curve takes the -6 dB low point down to 15 Hz and the -10 dB point to 13.5 Hz, and the Cut curve moves them up to 24 Hz and 18 Hz. Sensitivity is 92 dB with 150 mV input at 1.0 m. The enclosure is 668 x 420 x 550 mm and the unit weighs 68.0 kg.
Engineering and use context
The two woofers work in a push-pull arrangement inside a sealed acoustic suspension box, with one driver firing upward and the other firing forward. According to Perlisten, that layout doubles the volume displacement of a single unit and lowers even-order harmonic distortion by a further 10 to 12 dB, because the distortion products of the opposed drivers cancel. The motor combines several aluminium shorting rings, large magnets, Nomex spiders built in multiple layers and a voice coil wound from lightweight aluminium wire. Perlisten developed these parts with its own nonlinear modelling, simulating each part in free air as well as in the box, and then checked the results on a Klippel laser measurement rig. A Texas Instruments DSP with 48-bit data paths runs the signal processing, and a 32-bit Arm Cortex M4 chip using double precision floating point math supervises every function and protection circuit, reacting within microseconds.
Pairing
Line-level signal enters through a pair of XLR sockets or a pair of RCA sockets, and a matching set of unbuffered XLR and RCA outputs passes it to further subwoofers. With an AV processor that already applies bass management the low-pass filter is bypassed, and with a stereo preamplifier it can be set from 30 to 160 Hz at 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave. Phase is adjustable from 0 to 270 degrees and polarity can be reversed. A 2.4 inch colour LCD touchscreen gives local access to settings, and the iOS and Android app adds ten bands of parametric EQ, three memory presets, and control of as many as eight subwoofers in one system.
Alternatives
The Perlisten D215s is the second push-pull design of the D-Series, launched alongside the D212s in 2021 at USD 8,995.
