Perlisten Audio's R15s is the 15 inch member of the R-Series subwoofer range from a Wisconsin company whose products are developed in the USA. The R-Series consists of single-driver models that borrow driver and electronics ideas from the more expensive D-Series, and within it the R15s sits above the 12 inch R12s and below the R18s, which introduced the brand's first 18 inch driver. Satin black is the only listed finish, and a grille can be added as an option.
Key specs that matter
The woofer measures 380 mm and moves plus or minus 23.7 mm within its linear range, and its diaphragm is made from glass fiber. Amplifier output is 1.0 kW RMS. Perlisten publishes three response curves - with THX EQ the -6 dB points are 20 and 388 Hz and the -10 dB points 16 and 468 Hz, Boost EQ lowers the bottom limits to 16 Hz and 14 Hz, and Cut EQ raises them to 25 Hz and 19 Hz, leaving the upper limits as they are. Rated sensitivity is 92 dB at 1.0 m for a 150 mV input. The box is 498 mm high, 460 mm wide and 465 mm deep and weighs 35.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
A sealed acoustic suspension enclosure is used, so there is no port. Behind the composite cone Perlisten uses a motor fitted with more than one aluminium shorting ring and very large magnets, spiders layered from Nomex and a voice coil of light aluminium wire. The design team optimised the parts through proprietary nonlinear modelling and verified them with Klippel laser measurements before production. Control and protection run through a DSP with 48-bit data paths working with a 32-bit ARM M4 Cortex processor, which Perlisten says can respond within microseconds. A 2.4 inch touchscreen with a colour LCD sits on the cabinet, and deeper settings are available from the Perlisten app for iOS and Android, including a 10-band parametric EQ that stores three user presets.
Pairing
Inputs are limited to one XLR for balanced lines and one RCA for unbalanced ones, and matching unbuffered XLR and RCA outputs allow daisy-chaining one more subwoofer. If bass management is done upstream in an AV receiver, the internal low-pass filter is switched to bypass, and in a two-channel system it covers 30 to 160 Hz with a choice of 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave slopes. Phase varies continuously from 0 to 270 degrees, polarity has a normal and an inverted setting, and the subwoofer can wake up automatically on signal or from a 12 V trigger routed through the XLR or RCA connection.
Alternatives
The Perlisten R18s moves to a 460 mm glass fiber woofer with the same 1.0 kW RMS amplifier in a 618 x 570 x 575 mm cabinet weighing 57.3 kg.
