Perlisten Audio's R18s sits at the top of the company's R-Series subwoofer range and was the first product from the company to use an 18 inch woofer. It is a single-driver model, like the rest of the R-Series, which takes technology developed for the dearer D-Series into a lower price bracket, and it carries THX Dominus certification. The suggested price is USD 5,495 in the United States and GBP 5,000 in the United Kingdom. Perlisten offers it in satin black, and a grille is an extra-cost option.

Key specs that matter

The 460 mm driver has a glass fiber diaphragm and plus or minus 23.7 mm of linear excursion. A 1.0 kW RMS amplifier powers it. Under the THX EQ setting the specified range is 20 to 288 Hz at -6 dB and 16 to 340 Hz at -10 dB. The Boost EQ curve shifts the lower bounds to 16 Hz and 14 Hz, whereas the Cut EQ curve places them at 25 Hz and 19 Hz. With a 150 mV signal, output reaches 95 dB at 1.0 m. The enclosure stands 618 mm tall, 570 mm wide and 575 mm deep, and the finished unit weighs 57.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

This is an acoustic suspension design in a closed box, with no reflex port. The motor behind the cone has multiple aluminium shorting rings, a heavy magnet assembly, spiders made from several Nomex layers and a voice coil wound with lightweight aluminium wire. As with its other drivers, Perlisten arrived at these parts through in-house nonlinear modelling and tuned them with a Klippel laser measurement system. The electronics use a 48-bit DSP platform run by a 32-bit ARM M4 Cortex processor that looks after both the audio functions and the protection circuits. For local operation there is a 2.4 inch colour LCD touch panel set into the top of the cabinet. The rear panel holds the mains socket, trigger and service ports and the signal connectors.

Pairing

Inputs are a single XLR socket for balanced signal and a single RCA socket for unbalanced signal, with an unbuffered XLR and RCA output beside them for linking a further subwoofer. An AV processor that handles bass management can feed the R18s with its low-pass filter switched off, while a stereo preamplifier setup can use the filter between 30 and 160 Hz at slopes of 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave. Phase is adjustable over 0 to 270 degrees, polarity can be inverted, and turn-on can be automatic or controlled by a 12 V trigger. The iOS and Android app offers ten bands of parametric EQ, three stored user settings and the choice of EQ curve.
