Perlisten Audio's R12s is a single-driver 12 inch subwoofer from the R-Series, the line the company positions below its D-Series to bring the same core technology to a lower price. Within the R-Series range it sits between the 10 inch R10s and the 15 inch R15s. The current US price is USD 3,495, and the only finish listed is satin black, with a grille available at extra cost.
Key specs that matter
The 300 mm woofer uses a glass fiber composite diaphragm and reaches plus or minus 23.7 mm of linear travel. A 1.0 kW RMS amplifier drives it. Rated response with the THX EQ setting runs from 20 to 296 Hz at the -6 dB limits and from 16 to 380 Hz at -10 dB. Selecting the Large Room Boost curve moves the low limits down to 16 Hz and 14 Hz, whereas the Small Room Cut curve lifts them to 25 Hz and 19 Hz, with the upper limits left unchanged. Reference sensitivity is given as 90 dB for 150 mV at 1.0 m. Cabinet dimensions are 428 mm in height, 390 mm in width and 375 mm in depth, and the unit weighs 26.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
Perlisten designs its own drivers from scratch, optimising each part with proprietary nonlinear modelling both in free air and inside the enclosure, then refining the result on a Klippel laser measurement system. In the R12s woofer that work covers a heavy magnet structure fitted with several aluminium shorting rings, spiders built from multiple Nomex layers and a voice coil of lightweight aluminium wire. The cabinet is a closed acoustic suspension alignment rather than a vented one. Processing is handled by a DSP from Texas Instruments with 48-bit data paths, supervised by a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 chip performing double precision floating point arithmetic. A 2.4 inch colour LCD touchscreen gives direct access to the settings, and the same functions can be reached from a phone or tablet running the Perlisten app on iOS or Android. That app provides a 10-band parametric EQ, three user memory slots and the choice among the three EQ curves.
Pairing
Connection is by one balanced XLR input or one unbalanced RCA input, and each has an unbuffered output alongside it for daisy-chaining a further subwoofer. The low pass filter may be bypassed where an AV processor already sets the crossover, or tuned between 30 and 160 Hz at 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave for a two-channel preamplifier. Phase can be set at any point from 0 to 270 degrees, polarity can be flipped, and automatic power-on or a 12 V trigger is configurable through the XLR or RCA path.
Alternatives
The Perlisten R15s steps up to a 380 mm glass fiber driver on a 1.0 kW RMS amplifier, in a 498 x 460 x 465 mm enclosure that weighs 35.5 kg.
