The R212s is the dual 12 inch model among the R-Series subwoofers from Perlisten Audio and one of two push-pull designs in that range, next to the dual 10 inch R210s. A single R212s is certified to THX Ultra, and a pair of them meets THX Dominus. Pricing is USD 5,495 in the United States and GBP 5,500 in the United Kingdom. Finishes are piano black and matte black, and the magnetic grille is sold separately.
Key specs that matter
Two 300 mm woofers with glass fiber composite diaphragms each offer plus or minus 20 mm of linear excursion. Power comes from an internal Class D module rated at 1.3 kW RMS for short-term output. Once the THX EQ is selected, the -6 dB window spans 20 to 256 Hz and the -10 dB window 16 to 278 Hz, the Boost EQ for large rooms extends the low end to 16 Hz and 14 Hz respectively, and the Cut EQ for small rooms trims it to 25 Hz and 19 Hz. The box is 600 mm tall, 410 mm wide and 500 mm deep, and at 48.2 kg it needs two people to lift.
Engineering and use context
Perlisten places the pair of woofers in opposition within a sealed acoustic suspension enclosure, so while one cone moves outward the other moves inward. Perlisten states that this push-pull layout cancels even-order harmonics and lowers distortion by 10 to 12 dB against a single-driver design. The HDF cabinet has an 80 mm front baffle, 30 mm walls elsewhere and bracing in both horizontal and vertical directions. A Texas Instruments floating point DSP engine with 48-bit data paths works alongside a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 processor, which checks temperature, current, voltage and fault conditions every millisecond as part of the protection system. The 2.4 inch LCD colour touchscreen is placed on the top of the cabinet toward the front, and a companion iOS and Android app offers level and trim, time delay, three EQ presets and a 10-band parametric EQ. The rear panel adds a USB service port and a power switch.
Pairing
The connection panel doubles the inputs found on single-driver R-Series models - it accepts signal on two XLR sockets for balanced lines and two RCA sockets for unbalanced ones, plus two outputs of each kind without buffering to link additional subwoofers. For AV processors that handle bass management the low pass filter can be defeated, while a stereo system can use its 30 to 160 Hz range with 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB per octave slopes. Variable phase from 0 to 270 degrees, polarity reversal, a 40 Hz test tone, auto turn-on and a 12 V trigger complete the controls.
Alternatives
The Perlisten R210s pairs two push-pull 250 mm drivers with the same 1.3 kW amplifier in a 545 x 380 x 450 mm cabinet weighing 44.0 kg, and it reaches THX Dominus when four units are used.
