Fyne Audio builds the F502SP in the UK as the Special Production edition of its F502 floorstander. SP stands for trickle-down technology and tweaks, and here Fyne took the driver, crossover and bass tuning work of its F700 Series and placed it in the more compact and affordable F500 cabinet. At launch the piano gloss black and white versions cost GBP 3,500 per pair and the lacquered walnut veneer version GBP 4,000. Today it comes in natural walnut veneer or in piano gloss black, white or walnut lacquer.

Key specs that matter

Two 200 mm drivers taken from the F702 form a 2.5-way system. The upper one is an IsoFlare point source unit with a coaxial 25 mm magnesium compression tweeter, and the second one covers bass. Both use multi-fibre cones with FyneFlute surrounds. Crossover points are 250 Hz and 1.7 kHz with 2nd-order low-pass and 1st-order high-pass slopes. Rated range is 30 Hz to 34 kHz at -6 dB, typical in room, sensitivity at 92 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m and nominal impedance at 8 ohm. Continuous power handling is 100 W RMS. Each speaker is 1111 mm tall, 338 mm wide and 380 mm deep, and weighs 30.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

The tweeter has a neodymium magnet system and a pole piece shaped as a high-frequency waveguide. The passive crossover is a low-loss bi-wired design built with laminated core inductors and high-grade polypropylene capacitors, and the internal wiring is Van den Hul Matched Crystal silver-plated OFC. Components go through Fyne's Cryo-Lite treatment. The enclosure is high-rigidity MDF with twin cavity loading with a downward-firing port. Below it sits an aluminium sandwich plinth taken from the F700 range, with a BassTrax diffuser of Tractrix profile re-engineered to suit this smaller enclosure. The diffuser spreads the port output around the base of the cabinet. The IsoFlare arrangement sets the tweeter coaxially inside the upper driver, meaning all frequencies leave one point in space, keeping the drivers aligned in time and phase. A custom colour version of the F502SP is also listed by Fyne for the UK market only.

Pairing

Fyne recommends amplifiers of 30 to 200 W RMS per channel. The bi-wired crossover accepts two cable runs per speaker, feeding the bass and upper sections independently, or two stereo amplifiers in a bi-amp arrangement.
