The Vintage Twelve is a floorstanding loudspeaker in the Vintage Series from Fyne Audio of Glasgow, a range that combines traditional cabinet styling with the engineering of technical director Dr Paul Mills. Fyne states that it brings the scale of the F1-12S into the Vintage design, so the choice between the two is a matter of traditional or contemporary looks. The range also includes the Vintage Five, Vintage Ten and the larger Vintage Fifteen. The UK price is GBP 22,999.99 per pair in walnut.

Key specs that matter

The Vintage Twelve is two-way, using one 300 mm IsoFlare point source driver. The multi-fibre bass and midrange cone carries a 75 mm titanium alloy dome compression tweeter at its centre, energised by neodymium, and the filter splits the band at 750 Hz. Sensitivity is 96 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, nominal impedance is 8 ohm, and the typical in-room response is 24 Hz to 26 kHz at -6 dB. Fyne recommends 20 to 350 W RMS of amplification and rates the speaker at 175 W RMS continuous and 700 W peak. Each cabinet stands 1102 mm high, 572 mm wide and 591 mm deep, weighing 77.1 kg net.

Engineering and use context

The Vintage tweeter uses the titanium dome developed for the F1-10 and F1-12, with a vented rear chamber in its magnet that pushes resonance below the crossover region. A cast aluminium chassis carries the driver and is bonded to a cabinet brace with a coupling compound, and a FyneFlute roll surround terminates cone energy at the perimeter. The twin cavity cabinet is hand built from birch ply, contoured into curves of varying radius to stop standing waves, and finished in oiled walnut veneer with solid walnut trim, burr walnut inlays and gold anodised metalwork. The lower chamber vents downward onto a Tractrix profile BassTrax diffuser cone that spreads the output in a 360-degree pattern. The crossover draws on the electronics of the F1-12, is assembled by hand using point to point connections and is Deep Cryogenically Treated, using second order slopes on both sections. A front mounted dial, made as a bespoke weighted knob, adjusts the 2.5 to 5 kHz band by plus or minus 3 dB, and a second control does the same for HF energy above the crossover point.

Pairing

The high sensitivity allows low-powered valve amplifiers to drive the Vintage Twelve, and the top of the recommended range means high-output transistor designs are also within its rating. Bi-wired terminals permit two cable runs or bi-amplification.

Alternatives

The Fyne Audio Vintage Ten is the slimmer model below it, with a 250 mm IsoFlare driver, 94 dB sensitivity and a 1040 mm tall cabinet weighing 54.6 kg.
