The Z3 is the middle model of the Z-series floorstanders from Børresen Acoustics in Denmark, sitting between the Z2 and the much larger Z5. It is a 2½-way, four-driver tower whose distinguishing feature is a pair of 8 inch woofers mounted low on the front, near the floor, which Børresen says integrates them acoustically with the room. This is the untreated version, and Canadian pricing for a pair ranges from CAD 37,000 to 47,300 depending on finish and whether the cryogenic option is taken.

Key specs that matter

Børresen quotes a range of 35 Hz to 50 kHz, 89 dB sensitivity for 1 W, and an impedance of 4 ohm, with a recommended amplifier rating of over 50 W. The upper band is handled by a closed ribbon tweeter working from about 2.5 kHz, and a 4.5 inch unit covers the midrange above the two woofers. The cabinet is 102.5 cm tall, 22.5 cm wide and 40.0 cm deep, and the weight is 35.5 kg per speaker, only 1.5 kg more than its smaller sibling in an identical footprint.

Engineering and use context

Doubling the woofer count within the same cabinet is what lifts the sensitivity by 3 dB over the Z2 and moves the lower limit down by 5 Hz. The closed ribbon offers 94 dB efficiency and a 0.01 gram moving mass. Each cone driver has a membrane with a pair of thin carbon faces over a 4 mm Nomex honeycomb, totalling 5.5 grams. Motors use an 8 mm voice coil with an inductance of 0.06 mH, which Børresen reaches by linearising the magnetic field. The maker describes these parts as spin-offs from its 0-series development, and the crossover follows the same idea, wired in parallel from exclusive 0-series components for mechanical stability. Adjustable feet are designed to sit on the Ansuz Darkz range of resonance dampers, where titanium balls separate the layers. A cryogenic edition of the Z3, frozen to -196 degrees Celsius for a claimed 6 to 8 percent rise in metal conductivity, is sold alongside this version.

Pairing

With its higher sensitivity this model places a lighter load on the amplifier than the Z2, yet a transistor design able to supply generous current remains the sensible match. The low-mounted woofers make it a fit for rooms of around 20 m2 where a Z5 would be oversized.

Alternatives

The Børresen Z2 is the smaller-budget tower of the series, using a single woofer and rated down to 40 Hz at 86 dB.
