The Z2 Cryo Edition is the cryogenically frozen take on the smallest Z-series tower produced by the Børresen Acoustics team in Denmark. This edition retains the 2½-way layout and cabinet of the regular Z2, but every metal part inside the speaker is put through a cryogenic process before assembly. In the UK a pair sells for GBP 19,000 in either a satin finish of black or white. Børresen developed the Z-series around the goal of offering high-end performance at a more affordable price, drawing on components from its 0-series.

Key specs that matter

Its published data matches the untreated model. Response is quoted from 40 Hz up to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB at 1 W, and nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Amplifier power should exceed 50 W. The enclosure measures 102.5 x 22.5 x 40.0 cm from top to floor, across the baffle and in depth, while a single cabinet comes to 34.0 kg. Driver complement consists of a planar ribbon for the top octaves, crossed at around 2.5 kHz, a 4.5 inch unit handling the midrange and upper bass, and an 8 inch unit handling the bass.

Engineering and use context

The difference lies entirely in the freezing treatment. Metal components are brought down to roughly -196 degrees Celsius and held through a 72 hour cycle, and Børresen states that the result is 6 to 8 percent higher conductivity along with lower inductance. Because it touches voice coils, crossover parts and internal conductors alike, it is not something an owner can retrofit later to a standard pair. The rest of the engineering is shared with the regular version. Its ribbon has 94 dB of its own efficiency and a moving mass of 0.01 grams. The two cone drivers each carry a 5.5 gram membrane made of thin carbon layers on both sides of a 4 mm Nomex honeycomb, a construction picked to keep the cone rigid yet light. Their motors are built around an 8 mm voice coil with 0.06 mH of inductance and a linearised magnetic field, so the moving assembly stays under tighter amplifier control. A parallel crossover borrowed from 0-series parts completes the design.

Pairing

A low nominal load and modest efficiency mean the Cryo Edition works best with a transistor amplifier able to deliver current comfortably, and the slim baffle suits rooms near 20 m2. Owners who already use Ansuz resonance products can place the adjustable feet directly on Darkz supports.

Alternatives

The Børresen Z3 Cryo Edition applies the same freezing process to a higher-sensitivity tower with a pair of woofers and a 35 Hz lower limit.
