The F500 is the stand-mount model of Fyne Audio's original F500 series, from the Scottish manufacturer founded by a team of former Tannoy engineers. It is built around a single IsoFlare point-source driver in a compact ported cabinet, a pure two-way coaxial design aimed at small to medium listening rooms. The F500 range was later succeeded by the F500S series.
Key specs that matter
The single IsoFlare drive unit combines a 150 mm multi-fibre bass/midrange cone with a 25 mm titanium dome compression tweeter mounted at its centre. The crossover point is 1.7 kHz, using a second-order low-pass and first-order high-pass network. Frequency response is 45 Hz to 34 kHz at -6 dB, typical in room, sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and nominal impedance is 8 ohm. Recommended amplification is 30 to 120 W RMS with continuous power handling of 60 W RMS. Each speaker measures 325 x 200 x 320 mm and weighs 7.3 kg.
Engineering and use context
IsoFlare is Fyne Audio's point-source technology - the compression tweeter sits in the throat of the bass/midrange cone, which also acts as its waveguide, so low, mid and high frequencies radiate from the same physical point. This keeps the drivers time- and phase-aligned and gives consistent dispersion across the room, so off-axis listening positions receive a response close to the central seat. The port fires downward into the BassTrax Tractrix diffuser, a patented conical plinth that spreads bass energy evenly through 360 degrees around the base, making the speaker less sensitive to its distance from the rear wall than a rear-ported design. The cabinet uses gently curved front and rear baffles, a shape Fyne Audio uses to reduce resonances in the enclosure itself. Finishes are Dark Oak and Black Oak real wood veneer or Piano Gloss Black and White.
Pairing
With its nominal impedance and sensitivity, the F500 presents an easy load to stereo amplifiers and receivers within the recommended power range, and it also suits moderate-power tube amplifiers. The downward-firing port and BassTrax diffuser allow placement relatively close to a wall or on a sideboard, although rigid stands at ear height suit the coaxial driver best. As a front pair in home cinema it can be combined with the F501 and F502 floorstanders from the same series.
Alternatives
Fyne Audio also built the F501, a floorstanding speaker in that original F500 range.
