The Vintage Classic VIII SM is a stand-mount loudspeaker from Fyne Audio's Vintage Classic series, which recreates the look of 1970s British monitor loudspeakers around the company's modern coaxial driver technology. It combines walnut veneer, a deep black baffle and gold trim with a single large IsoFlare point-source driver, giving a compact speaker with a driver size normally found in floorstanders.

The VIII SM uses one 200mm (8-inch) IsoFlare driver, combining a multi-fibre bass/midrange cone with FyneFlute roll surround and a coincident 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter with ferrite magnet system. The cabinet is ported downward into a BassTrax Tractrix diffuser. Sensitivity is 91dB, nominal impedance is 8 ohms, in-room response is 34Hz to 34kHz (-6dB), recommended amplification is 30 to 180W RMS, and power handling is 90W RMS continuous and 360W peak. Each speaker measures 540 x 330 x 294mm and weighs 16.1kg.

Engineering and use context

In the IsoFlare arrangement, the compression tweeter sits at the centre of the bass/midrange cone, so all frequencies radiate from one point. This keeps the two sections time- and phase-aligned and gives even dispersion into the room, so the balance changes little away from the central seat. FyneFlute is a roll surround with a fluted profile that breaks up the resonance a plain surround creates where it meets the cone, reducing midrange resonance peaks. The magnesium tweeter dome is light and stiff, pushing its break-up well above the audible range. The port fires down into the BassTrax Tractrix diffuser, a shaped cone that spreads bass energy evenly around the cabinet through 360 degrees, and the system is designed specifically for stand mounting, where the diffuser has air below it. Unlike the half-inch chipboard used in the original 1970s speakers that inspired its look, the cabinet is built from high-density composite fibreboard with a dedicated internal bracing structure for greater rigidity and lower panel resonance.

Pairing

High efficiency lets low-power amplifiers, including tube designs, drive the VIII SM, while powerful solid-state amplifiers suit it as well. Rigid stands at ear height suit both the coaxial driver and the downward-firing port. The period styling pairs visually with vintage or retro-styled electronics and turntables.
