The F301i is a compact two-way standmount or bookshelf loudspeaker from Fyne Audio and belongs to the F300i series. It is designed for smaller listening rooms and is offered in black ash, light oak and walnut. The same series also includes the F302i and F303i floorstanders and the F300i LCR centre channel.

Key specs that matter

The 150 mm bass and midrange unit uses a cone of multi-fibre paper with a central phase plug that smooths its roll-off at the top of its band. Treble is handled by a 25 mm titanium dome with a neodymium magnet system, a design derived from the more costly F500 series that replaced the polyester dome of the F301 and lifted the upper response to 34 kHz. The two drivers meet at 3.2 kHz through a second order low pass filter on the bass driver and a third order high pass filter on the tweeter. Fyne Audio quotes a response of 44 Hz to 34 kHz at -6 dB, measured as a typical in-room figure. Sensitivity is 89 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m and the nominal impedance is 8 ohm. Recommended amplifier power is 35 to 150 W RMS, and continuous power handling is 50 W RMS.

Engineering and use context

Fyne Audio uses a rear ported cabinet, with the reflex opening placed on the back panel. Its dimensions are 300 mm high, 190 mm wide and 271 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 5.3 kg net. Internal cross-bracing stiffens the MDF panels, and a resonance absorbing mastic couples the magnet of the bass driver to the bracing. The rubber surround uses FyneFlute, a non-homogeneous interface meant to terminate energy travelling through the cone. Precision parts in the filter network include an LF inductor wound on a laminated core for minimal loss plus HF capacitors made of polypropylene. Speaker cables attach to gold plated terminals. Having the crossover filters at different orders, steeper on the tweeter side than on the woofer side, gives the titanium dome more protection from low frequency energy below the crossover while the bass cone rolls off more gently. The high current capable terminals and the easy nominal load are meant to make the speaker easy to connect to most AV amplifiers and receivers. With the F300i LCR and the larger floorstanders in the same series, the F301i can form part of a matched surround layout using drivers from one family.

Any stereo integrated amplifier or AV receiver inside the advised power window falls within the maker's guidance, keeping in mind the lower continuous handling limit. The speaker suits a 20 m2 room or smaller, and it can be used either on a shelf or on stands.
