The F300i is the smallest bookshelf model in the F300i series from Fyne Audio, a loudspeaker maker based in Scotland. It is a revision of the original F300 with a new titanium dome tweeter and an upgraded crossover, and Fyne pitches it at both stereo systems and home theatre use. The UK price is GBP 250 per pair, making it the least expensive stereo pair in a line-up whose other members are the F301i standmount, the F302i and F303i floorstanders and the F300i LCR centre.
Key specs that matter
Fyne builds it as a rear-vented two-way with one 125 mm bass and midrange unit using a multi-fibre paper cone and a 25 mm titanium dome tweeter. The drivers cross at 3.4 kHz through a second-order network on the low side and a third-order network on the high side. Sensitivity is 87 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, nominal impedance is 8 ohm and the stated response is 54 Hz to 34 kHz at -6 dB, typical in room. Recommended amplification is 20 to 70 W RMS, with continuous handling of 35 W RMS. The cabinet is 250 mm tall, 156 mm wide and 211 mm deep, at 3.7 kg per unit. Walnut, Black Ash and Light Oak finishes are listed.
Engineering and use context
The earlier F300 used a 25 mm polyester dome, and the titanium replacement, derived from the costlier F500 series, extends the upper limit. That tweeter runs on a neodymium magnet and includes a phase loss compensator in front of the dome. The woofer has a phase plug at its centre, which Fyne uses to smooth the midrange roll-off, and its rubber surround carries FyneFlute shaping intended to terminate energy travelling out along the cone. The enclosure is MDF with internal cross-bracing, and the bass driver magnet is coupled to that bracing with a resonance-absorbing mastic. In the crossover Fyne uses a low-loss laminated-core inductor for the woofer and polypropylene capacitors for the tweeter, with gold-plated speaker terminals on the back. A bracket is formed into the rear panel so the speaker can hang flush on a wall.
Pairing
With its easy nominal load, the F300i is an easy match for budget integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers within the recommended power window. The flush wall mount and small cabinet also let it work as a surround or rear effects speaker beside an F300i LCR in a multichannel setup, or as a desktop pair.
Alternatives
A step up in the range is the Fyne Audio F301i, the second bookshelf model of the F300i series at GBP 349.99 per pair.
