The 8380A is a three-way main monitor from Genelec, launched on 30 September 2025 with shipping from the first quarter of 2026. Genelec places it below the five-way 8381A as a large studio main speaker, and it has the same external dimensions as the earlier 1038 and 1238 models, which allows it to replace them in existing soffit openings.

Key specs that matter

A 380 mm woofer handles bass in a 110 litre MDF reflex enclosure with two front ports, and a coaxial driver places a 25 mm aluminium dome tweeter inside a 130 mm midrange cone. A RAM-L2 amplifier unit supplies 500 W Class D for the woofer, 250 W Class D for midrange and 200 W Class AB for treble. Crossovers are at 470 Hz and 2.5 kHz. The -6 dB range extends from 29 Hz or lower to 43 kHz, and ±1.5 dB accuracy holds from 38 Hz to 20 kHz. Short-term output exceeds 122 dB, long-term output exceeds 115 dB, and peak output for a pair at 2 m exceeds 124 dB. Self-noise is 0 dB or less, and latency is 2.8 or 6.6 ms depending on the phase setting. For connections there is an analogue XLR, a digital AES/EBU input with a thru output, and a GLM network pair of RJ45 sockets. Consumption is under 0.5 W in standby and 21 W idle and 800 W under full load. The cabinet measures 810 x 480 x 420 mm and weighs 54 kg with the amplifier or 48 kg without it.

Engineering and use context

The fanless RAM-L2 amplifier is attached to the back of the cabinet on vibration absorbers and can be removed for installation in a 19-inch rack, where it takes 3U and weighs 6 kg. Moving it away from the enclosure helps when the speaker is built into a wall. The coaxial midrange and tweeter sit in a Directivity Control Waveguide, so both drivers radiate from one point with controlled dispersion. Two front-facing ports allow the cabinet to be soffit-mounted flush with a wall, and it can also stand free. The phase setting trades lower latency for a different phase response, giving the two latency figures. Calibration and control run through GLM. Finishes are black and white.

Pairing

The 8380A is designed for professional control rooms where it is fed by analogue XLR or AES/EBU from a console or converter. With its deep bass extension, many systems use it without a subwoofer, while multichannel rooms can add SAM subwoofers through GLM.

The Genelec 8361A is the nearest smaller three-way model, a coaxial monitor with two 263 x 137 mm woofers and 700 W for bass in a 31.9 kg enclosure.
