The 8320A is the smallest two-way monitor in Genelec's Smart Active Monitoring range, introduced in 2014 alongside the 8330A. Unlike the analogue 8000 models, a SAM monitor has no rear DIP switches and is set up through Genelec's GLM software over a network cable, and the 8320A applies this approach to a 4-inch nearfield speaker for desktops, small studios and home systems.
Key specs that matter
A 105 mm (4-inch) cone woofer and a 19 mm metal dome tweeter each get a 50 W Class D amplifier, and the crossover is set at 2.9 kHz. Response is 55 Hz to 23 kHz at -6 dB and within ±1.5 dB between 66 Hz and 20 kHz. Short-term output exceeds 100 dB, long-term output exceeds 94 dB, and peaks reach 107 dB or more. The 8320A has an analogue XLR input only, without the AES/EBU input of larger SAM models, and two RJ45 sockets for the GLM network. Power consumption is below 0.5 W in ISS standby, 3 W idle and 50 W at full output from a 100 to 240 V supply. The monitor measures 230 mm high, or 242 mm on its Iso-Pod, 151 mm wide and 142 mm deep, and weighs 3.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
Settings such as level, delay and response filters are stored in the monitor after configuration in GLM, which requires the GLM kit, and a reset button returns the speaker to factory settings. The drivers sit in an aluminium MDE housing, short for Minimum Diffraction Enclosure, whose curved surfaces lower edge diffraction, and the tweeter is loaded by a Directivity Control Waveguide that controls dispersion so the response stays consistent off axis. A reflex port with a flared rear exit extends the bass of the small woofer. The Iso-Pod stand isolates the cabinet from the desk and allows it to be tilted. In a SAM monitor, protection of the drivers runs inside the DSP. ISS puts the monitor into standby when no input is present. For mounting there is a 3/8-inch UNC thread in the base and two M6x10 threads on the back. Colour options are dark grey, black and white, plus unpainted RAW.
Pairing
An audio interface or mixer with balanced XLR outputs feeds the monitors directly, and the GLM network connects them to a computer for setup. Adding a Genelec SAM subwoofer extends the bass, with integration handled in GLM, and the 7350A is the model Genelec designed for the 8320A in stereo and multichannel systems.
Alternatives
The Genelec 8330A is the next SAM model up, with a 130 mm woofer, an AES/EBU digital input and a 45 Hz lower limit at -6 dB.
