Polk Audio is a US speaker company started in 1972 in Baltimore by Matthew Polk, George Klopfer and Sandy Gross, who met as students at Johns Hopkins University. Now headquartered in Carlsbad, California, it makes hi-fi and home theatre speakers, subwoofers, soundbars, outdoor and built-in speakers and car and marine audio, and still describes its products as engineered in Baltimore.
Range & what it's known for
The home speaker range runs from the Monitor XT and T series through Signature Elite to the Reserve series, which carries Hi-Res Audio and IMAX Enhanced certification. Soundbars include the MagniFi line, such as the MagniFi Mini AX and MagniFi Max AX, and the Signa S2D. Built-in models come in the Luxury, RCI, Reference Theater and Vanishing series, with Atrium for outdoor use and DB Plus for cars and boats. Historically the brand is linked to Stereo Dimensional Array, a design that cancels crosstalk between each speaker and the opposite ear.
Who owns it and where it's made
Polk was acquired by Directed Electronics in 2006 and folded into Sound United in 2015, where it shared a group with Denon and Marantz. Masimo bought Sound United in 2022, and Harman International completed its acquisition of the group from Masimo in September 2025. In 2015 Polk opened an audio and acoustics research centre in Owings Mills, Maryland, which also served Denon, Marantz and Bowers & Wilkins. The range has also included smart speakers working with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
The lineup in this catalog
Loudspeakers and soundbars, with prices running from about USD 100 for the simplest speakers to well over USD 1,000 for the top soundbar systems.
Who it's for
Polk suits buyers furnishing a living room or home cinema on a moderate budget. Many Polk owners begin with a Monitor XT pair or a MagniFi soundbar, Signature Elite adds larger floorstanders and centre channels for surround systems, and Reserve is the top of the home range. Built-in and outdoor series let the same brand cover a whole house.
