The Signature Elite ES15 is the smallest two-way speaker of the Signature Elite range from Polk Audio with Hi-Res Audio certification, and the maker allows shelf, stand or wall placement, with a key hole slot on the back for hanging. The larger ES20 sits beside it in the same series, and the family also includes the ES10, ES30, ES35, ES50, ES55 and ES60 as well, so the ES15 can be combined with matching floorstanders, a centre and surround models from one family.
Key specs that matter
Inside are one 25.4 mm Terylene dome tweeter and one 133.4 mm woofer whose polypropylene cone is reinforced with mica, and Polk crosses between them at 2.3 kHz. The rated range runs from 44 Hz to 40,000 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, with a sensitivity of 85 dB and an impedance of 8 ohm. The recommended amplifier power is 20 to 100 W per channel. Each cabinet measures 19.1 cm wide, 30.48 cm high and 25.9 cm deep and weighs 5.9 kg. Black, white and brown versions exist.
Engineering and use context
Bass loading uses the patented Power Port, which Polk describes as a vent with a larger surface area and smoother air flow than a conventional port, aimed at more output and lower distortion. The woofer belongs to the Dynamic Balance family, a Polk driver approach meant to suppress unwanted cone resonances, and the enclosure follows what the company calls a Dynamically Balanced acoustic array with precision crossovers. The upper limit beyond 40 kHz is what qualifies the model for the Hi-Res logo. Each box has just one pair of gold-plated 5-way posts, so the tweeter and woofer cannot be fed by individual cable pairs. The key hole slot allows the speaker to be used as a wall-hung surround in a home cinema, while the modest depth suits a bookshelf or a desk as a stereo pair in a 20 m2 room.
Pairing
With its modest sensitivity the ES15 asks for more amplifier power than a high-efficiency design to reach the same level, so a two-channel amp or a surround receiver operating near the upper end of the suggested power window is a better match than a very small amplifier. The nominal impedance keeps it easy for mainstream AV receivers, and inside a surround system it can be paired with the larger Signature Elite speakers for the front channels.
Alternatives
The Polk Signature Elite ES20 sits above it as a bigger Signature Elite standmount, listed at USD 399 per pair with the same 1 inch Terylene tweeter and a 6.5 inch woofer.
