The SL-1210G-K belongs to the Grand Class range of Technics as a direct-drive deck and is the black version of the SL-1200G, which is finished in silver. Technics lists it at USD 4,999.99 in the United States. The design pairs a newly developed twin-rotor coreless motor with a heavy three-layer platter and a magnesium tonearm, and the K suffix marks the black finish. Technics announced it on 7 September 2021 with availability from October 2021, in answer to demand that followed the limited SL-1210GAE of 2020, and its technical specification is identical to that of the SL-1200G.
Key specs that matter
Speeds are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm, with pitch adjustment of plus or minus 8 and 16 percent. Starting torque is 3.3 kg-cm. Rated wow and flutter reaches 0.025 percent W.R.M.S. under JIS C5521, and rumble is 78 dB with IEC 98A weighting. The platter measures 332 mm across and weighs approximately 3.6 kg. The universal static-balance arm has an effective length of 230 mm, an overhang of 15 mm and a 22 degree offset angle. The deck measures about 453 x 173 x 372 mm and weighs about 18 kg. Power consumption is 14 W in use and 0.2 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
Without an iron core the motor runs free of cogging, and its double-rotor, single-stator construction supplies torque for the heavier platter. Speed is detected by a hybrid encoder, with a Hall sensor reading rotor position. The cabinet has four layers under a heavy aluminium top plate and stands on high-damping silicone-rubber insulators. The platter combines brass with aluminium diecast in a three-layer build, and deadening rubber covers its entire rear surface to damp vibration. The tonearm pipe is cold-drawn magnesium, chosen for its high damping effect, it turns in high-precision bearings with a cut-processed housing, and the arm height can be adjusted from 0 to 6 mm. Stylus pressure is set from 0 to 4 g with a direct-reading scale on the counterweight, so no separate gauge is needed for basic setup of tracking force. Compared with the DJ models, the whole platform is aimed at home playback, with speed control stable enough to serve as a reference deck for a record collection that includes 78 rpm discs.
Pairing
The arm handles a broad range of cartridge weights - 5.6 to 12.0 g without an auxiliary weight, 10.0 to 16.4 g with the small weight and 14.3 to 19.8 g with the large one - so heavier moving-coil bodies also fit. A separate phono preamplifier suited to that cartridge then feeds the amplifier.
Alternatives
A more affordable direct-drive option from the brand is the Technics SL-1200GR2, which uses a 2.5 kg aluminium platter and Delta-Sigma Drive motor control.
