The SL-1300G is a direct-drive turntable in the Technics Grand Class range, part of the fourth-generation transition that followed the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2. Compared with the GR2 decks it drops the pitch adjustment and the strobe, and it gains a stiffer build and a balanced platter of brass and aluminium. It comes in black or silver and is sold without a cartridge, at USD 3,999.99 in the US and GBP 2,799 in the UK.

Key specs that matter

Speeds are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm, the last running at 78.26 rpm in practice. Starting torque is 0.32 N m, wow and flutter stays at 0.025% W.R.M.S. and 33 1/3 rpm is reached from rest in 0.7 seconds, with an electronic brake for stopping. The three-layer platter is 332 mm in diameter and weighs about 3.6 kg including its rubber sheet, which Technics says gives more than twice the inertial mass of the SL-1200MK5 platter. On the S-shaped static-balance tonearm, effective length is 230 mm, overhang is 15 mm and the offset angle is 22 degrees, with height adjustment from 0 to 6 mm and stylus pressure from 0 to 4 g. It accepts cartridges from 5.6 to 20.7 g without the auxiliary weight, and more with it. Overall size is 453 x 173 x 372 mm and weight is about 13.0 kg. Power draw is 10 W running and 0.2 W off.

Engineering and use context

The brushless DC motor is a coreless twin-rotor design with nine trapezoidal stators mounted on a double-sided circuit board, and without an iron core it avoids cogging. Speed is governed by Delta-Sigma Drive, which processes the drive signal with pulse width modulation to cancel small rotational errors and suppress motor vibration. The whole underside of the platter carries a deadening rubber layer. The cabinet joins BMC and an aluminium die-cast chassis in two layers with reinforcing ribs, and it sits on high-damping silicone insulators chosen for vibration control and long-term stability. A Multi-Stage Silent Power Supply uses a fast switching supply with current-injection active noise cancelling, and metal shielding inside the case blocks external interference. The arm tube is light, stiff aluminium, and the supplied headshell weighs about 7.6 g.

Pairing

The deck has no phono stage and outputs through gold-plated detachable phono terminals, so it needs a phono preamplifier matched to whichever cartridge the owner fits. Packed with it are a headshell, a PHONO cable with its earth lead, an overhang gauge, a cartridge screw set, a dust cover and an EP adapter.

Alternatives

The Technics SL-1200GR2 is the Grand Class direct-drive deck that keeps pitch adjustment and a strobe.
