Technics built the SL-50C direct-drive turntable around an internal MM phono equaliser and a factory-fitted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. US availability began in September 2025, together with the Bluetooth-equipped SL-40CBT, with which it shares its chassis. Finishes are Black, Terracotta Brown and Gray, with a US price of USD 899.99.
Key specs that matter
The SL-50C plays at 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.025% W.R.M.S., build-up time to 33 1/3 rpm is 0.7 seconds, and an electronic brake stops the platter. The die-cast aluminium platter has reinforcing ribs, a 300 mm diameter and a weight of around 1.26 kg with the mat. A static-balance S-shaped arm with an aluminium tube gives 230 mm effective length, 15 mm overhang and a 22 degree offset. The deck is 430 x 128 x 353 mm, weighs about 7.1 kg and uses 4 W when on and 0.2 W when off.
Engineering and use context
The drive is an iron-coreless, single-rotor brushless DC motor with 12 poles and 9 coils, which Technics derives from its proven coreless direct-drive system, and the lack of an iron core means no cogging. The Ortofon 2M Red carries an elliptical stylus and, according to Technics, is matched to the internal phono EQ. That cartridge is designed for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm records, so playing 78s calls for a stylus made for them, such as the Ortofon 2M 78. The plinth is MDF, and height-adjustable feet use a new insulator material. Controls on the front face are an on and off button, a start and stop button and speed selectors, and the dust cover is hinged. The arm sits on a new base with a plain bearing built around a 3 mm high-precision stainless steel centre shaft, and there is no auto lift at the end of a side. Technics ships the deck in cardboard-based packaging instead of polystyrene foam.
Pairing
The internal stage gives 36.5 dB of gain, so the deck can be wired directly to an unused line socket of a stereo amp, a receiver or powered monitors. A Phono-Line switch on the rear panel bypasses it for owners who prefer an external phono stage, and the rear also carries the RCA output and an earth terminal. Supplied items are a turntable mat, a dust cover, an EP adapter, a balance weight, a headshell with the cartridge mounted, a phono cable, an earth lead, a power cord and a manual.
Alternatives
The Technics SL-40CBT uses the same chassis with Bluetooth aptX Adaptive, an Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge and two speeds only.
