The SL-1200G-S is a variant of the SL-1200G, a manual direct-drive model belonging to the Grand Class series. Panasonic, which owns the Technics brand, based it around a newly developed coreless motor and a heavy multi-layer platter and cabinet, and supplies it complete with its own tonearm and a headshell, though no cartridge or phono stage is included. The US price is USD 4,999.99.
Key specs that matter
Supported speeds are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm, and pitch can be varied over a range of 8 or 16 percent either way. Measured wow and flutter is 0.025 percent W.R.M.S. to JIS C5521 and rumble is 78 dB, IEC 98A weighted. Starting torque is 3.3 kg cm, and the platter reaches 33 1/3 rpm from standstill in 0.7 seconds. The platter is 332 mm across and weighs approximately 3.6 kg with its rubber sheet. The whole unit measures 453 mm wide, 173 mm high and 372 mm deep and weighs approximately 18 kg. The motor is a brushless DC type. Power consumption is 14 W, falling to 0.2 W in standby. The US version runs from AC 120 V at 60 Hz, with parts and labour cover lasting three years in that market.
Engineering and use context
The direct-drive motor has no iron core, which removes cogging, and uses a twin-rotor layout to reduce the load on the bearing. Advanced motor control supplies high starting torque while keeping rotation stable at speed. The platter has three layers - diecast brass and aluminium combined with deadening rubber to suppress unwanted resonance. The cabinet has four layers, with a 10 mm aluminium top panel over aluminium diecast, BMC and heavyweight rubber. The universal static-balance tonearm uses lightweight magnesium for its high damping effect. It has an effective length of 230 mm, an overhang of 15 mm and an offset angle of 22 degrees. Tracking error stays within 2 degrees 32 minutes at the outer groove and within 32 minutes at the inner groove. Arm height adjusts over 0 to 6 mm and tracking force over 0 to 4 g, while cartridges weighing 5.6 to 28.5 g can be balanced with the help of an auxiliary weight. Connections are one phono pin jack pair and an earth terminal.
Pairing
The turntable needs an amplifier with a phono stage or a separate phono preamplifier matched to the chosen cartridge type. The 78 rpm speed makes the deck usable for shellac records when fitted with a suitable stylus.
Alternatives
The Technics SL-1200MK7 is another direct-drive turntable in the SL-1200 family, aimed at DJ use.
