The SL-40CBT is a Technics direct-drive record player combining a built-in MM phono equaliser and Bluetooth output, launched in the US in September 2025 alongside the SL-50C. It comes with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge fitted at the factory, so it can play records straight out of the box. In the US it lists at USD 899.99, in Black, Terracotta Brown or Gray.
Key specs that matter
Two speeds are supported, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Wow and flutter is 0.025% W.R.M.S., and the platter comes up to 33 1/3 rpm in 0.7 seconds, with an electronic brake. The platter is aluminium die-cast with reinforcing ribs, 300 mm in diameter and about 1.26 kg with its mat. The static-balance S-shaped aluminium tonearm has a 230 mm effective length, a 15 mm overhang and a 22 degree offset angle, and tracking error is kept to 2 degrees 32 minutes or less on the outermost groove of a 30 cm disc and within 0 degrees 32 minutes at the inner groove. The built-in phono equaliser provides 36.5 dB of gain for moving-magnet cartridges. Bluetooth is version 5.4, supports Qualcomm aptX Adaptive and SBC codecs and reaches about 10 m in line of sight. The turntable measures 430 x 128 x 353 mm, weighs about 7.1 kg and uses 4 W in operation and 0.3 W when off on the 220-240 V version.
Engineering and use context
Technics fits an iron-coreless brushless DC direct-drive motor, derived from its established coreless system, which removes cogging and keeps rotation steady. The AT-VM95C uses a conical stylus, which suits a broad range of pressings. The plinth is MDF, available in the three finishes, and the insulators under it have been newly tuned to reduce vibration and resonance within the audible band. With the phono equaliser inside, the deck connects to a line input on any amplifier, active speaker or system that has no dedicated phono socket, and Bluetooth lets it send records wirelessly to a compatible speaker or pair of headphones without any cable. Packaging is cardboard-based and replaces polystyrene foam.
Pairing
The aptX Adaptive codec can be used where the receiving device supports it. The supplied accessories are a dust cover, a turntable mat, an EP adapter, a balance weight, phono cables and an earth lead.
Alternatives
The Technics SL-50C shares this chassis without Bluetooth, adds 78 rpm and comes with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.
