The SP-10RE-S is a Reference Class direct-drive turntable from Technics and the newest model of the revived SP-10 series. It is supplied as a motor unit with a separate control unit, and the brand describes it as the core of the SL-1000RE-S complete turntable system. Technics lists it at USD 14,199.99 in America. Because it has no tonearm of its own, it is intended to be fitted into a plinth with an arm board of the owner's choice.

Key specs that matter

Speeds are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm and each can be trimmed by up to 16 percent in either direction. Starting torque is 0.39 N-m, or 4.0 kg-cm. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.015 percent W.R.M.S. The platter weighs approximately 7.9 kg, measures 323 mm across and has an inertial mass of about 1 ton-cm. The main unit measures 365 x 109 x 365 mm and weighs about 18.2 kg, while the control unit measures 110 x 84 x 350 mm and weighs about 2.1 kg.

Engineering and use context

Motion comes from a double-coil, twin-rotor coreless brushless DC motor with 12 poles and 18 coils, the coils sitting on both sides and offset by 60 degrees so that torque is high enough for the heavy platter. Thrust bearings use a special engineering plastic for rigidity and reliability. The platter is a three-layer assembly - a 10 mm brass weight with tungsten weights on its outer edge, laminated onto aluminium diecast, with deadening rubber on the rear surface. Stainless steel weights in the chassis keep the centre of gravity low. Moving the power supply and speed electronics into the outboard control unit keeps them away from the motor chassis. The control unit uses a switching power supply with a circuit for reducing unwanted noise, and the link between the two units is designed to resist external noise. Its OLED display shows the selected speed, the percentage offset and the actual rotation speed during playback. Separating the heavy motor unit from the electronics also lets an owner place the controls within reach while the deck stays on its own support.

Pairing

As a bare drive the SP-10RE-S needs a plinth and a tonearm before it can play a record, and the arm in turn needs a cartridge and a phono stage suited to it. Owners who prefer a finished system can choose the SL-1000RE-S, which builds on this motor unit.

Alternatives

For a complete deck at a lower price the brand also makes the Technics SL-1210G-K, a Grand Class deck with its own magnesium arm and a 3.6 kg platter.
