The AT-LP70X is an automatic turntable from Audio-Technica with belt drive, sold with the AT-VM95C dual moving magnet cartridge already fitted to its J-shaped tonearm and with a switchable phono preamplifier built in. Two colour versions are listed, Black/Gray under the code AT-LP70X-BG and Black/Bronze as AT-LP70X-BZ, costing USD 269 in North America. Audio-Technica also offers it in a turntable and speaker bundle under the code AT-LP70X-BDL3X.

Key specs that matter

The platter is die-cast aluminium, driven by a belt from a DC motor, and it spins at 33-1/3 or 45 rpm. Rated wow and flutter stays under 0.25 percent (WTD), while signal to noise is better than 55 dB. The cartridge delivers a nominal 4.0 mV at 1 kHz and 5 cm/sec, and with the internal stage engaged the line output reaches 252 mV, which corresponds to a nominal 36 dB of RIAA-equalised gain. Arm geometry gives an effective length of 220 mm, an overhang of 18 mm and a tracking error angle under 2.0 degrees, and tracking force is set by the factory in the 1.8 to 2.2 g window. The plinth is 400 mm wide, 330 mm deep and 110 mm high and weighs about 2.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

Operation is fully automatic, so pressing start sends the arm to the first groove and an auto-stop function brings it back to its rest once the record ends, with no manual cueing needed. Because the counterweight, anti-skate and arm height are fixed and the headshell is not detachable, there is nothing to calibrate on arrival. The cartridge body stays on the arm, yet the stylus can be exchanged for any VM95 Series stylus, so a buyer can move from the supplied 0.6 mil conical tip to a finer profile later. The body is a three-piece plastic moulding, and a felt mat sits on the platter, which Audio-Technica describes as anti-resonance. Both RCA phono and RCA line signals leave through removable leads, so a longer or better cable can be fitted without opening the chassis. An external adapter, model FJ-SW1261200500DN, supplies 12 V DC from mains between 100 and 240 V, and power draw is 1.5 W. A hinged, removable dust cover, a 45 rpm adapter and an RCA cable of about 1.0 m with a ground wire are in the box.

Pairing

With the preamplifier switched to line, the deck connects straight to an aux input on an integrated amplifier, a receiver or active speakers that lack a phono stage. Switching it off sends the raw moving magnet signal to an external phono preamp or to any amplifier that already has a moving magnet input, and the ground lead should then go to the matching terminal.

Alternatives

For a wireless option, Audio-Technica lists the AT-LP70XBT, an automatic belt-drive version of the same turntable that adds a Bluetooth transmitter.
