The SACD 10 is the Reference SACD player from Marantz, built around the company's own SACDM-3 disc transport and a set of digital inputs that let it act as a DAC for other sources. It plays SACD and CD, and its USB-B input accepts DSD up to DSD256 and PCM up to 384 kHz at 32 bits. The finish is Black or Marantz Champagne.
Key specs that matter
For SACD, Marantz quotes a frequency response of 2 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB, harmonic distortion of 0.0004%, S/N of 118 dB and a dynamic range of 112 dB. With CD, response runs 2 Hz to 20 kHz within 1.0 dB, distortion is 0.0015%, S/N reaches 116 dB and dynamic range is 98 dB. Fixed analogue outputs deliver 2.0 Vrms from the RCA pair and 4.0 Vrms from the balanced XLR pair. Digital inputs comprise two optical, two coaxial, USB-A and USB-B, with the optical and coaxial ports handling 44.1 to 192 kHz, with one digital output of each of those two types. The 6.3 mm headphone jack gives 130 mW into 32 ohms. The unit is 440 mm wide, 192 mm high and 442 mm deep and weighs 33.0 kg, and it draws 55 W, or under 0.3 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
The SACD 10 converts through the Marantz MMM-Conversion circuit fed by MMM-Stream processing, which offers two dither settings or off, four noise shaper modes named Balanced, Natural, Dynamic Music and Dynamic Voice, and two selectable digital filters. A jitter reducer and a DAC master clock design are fitted, though the clock scheme does not cover network playback. The USB-B input works in asynchronous mode and is isolated by the Complete Isolation System Duo. The output stage uses a new HDAM circuit, and the fully discrete headphone amplifier has low, mid and high gain settings. Dual power supplies with toroidal transformers feed the circuits, laid out on an 8-layer circuit board. The front, back shell and side covers are aluminium, the sides up to 15.8 mm thick, while the top cover is 12 mm aluminium and the bottom plate is triple-layer copper-plated. Solid aluminium feet with copper sit underneath, the front panel is lit on all sides with a dimmer, and the display is OLED.
Pairing
A remote control bus terminal with an internal and external switch allows system control, and the RC004PMND remote is included. The box also contains an audio-grade OFC power cord, a stereo RCA cable, a remote connector cable and a certificate of authenticity card. The balanced outputs suit an amplifier with XLR inputs.
Alternatives
For CD-only playback Marantz offers the CD 70, a 6.5 kg model whose front USB-A socket reads FLAC, ALAC and DSD files.
