The CD 50n is a CD and network audio player from Marantz that combines a disc drive, HEOS Built-in streaming, a USB DAC, an HDMI ARC input for a television and a headphone amplifier in one 442 x 424 x 130 mm case weighing 10.3 kg. The US price is USD 2,000, with black and silver-gold versions on offer.
Key specs that matter
With CD as the source, Marantz lists a frequency response of 2 Hz to 20 kHz, dynamic range of 100 dB at 16 bit, a signal-to-noise ratio of 112 dB, distortion of 0.0016 percent at 16 bit and channel separation of 105 dB. Through high-resolution PCM the response reaches 2 Hz to 50 kHz at minus 3 dB with a 192 kHz sample rate, and dynamic range rises to 112 dB at 24 bit. Outputs are fixed RCA at 2.2 V and variable RCA at up to 4.4 V, with no balanced output. Digital connections include one coaxial and one optical input and output, and inputs accept 192 kHz at 24 bit over S/PDIF. Via the rear USB Type-B socket it handles PCM to 384 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz, and a front USB port reads memory sticks. Wi-Fi covers 2.4 and 5 GHz, and wired Ethernet is also fitted. Power draw is 35 W.
Engineering and use context
An ESS ES9038Q2M chip does the D/A work under a custom Marantz digital filter, and two selectable filter settings are available for CD and DAC use with PCM. Two master clocks are placed next to the DAC, one serving 48 kHz-based rates and one serving 44.1 kHz-based rates as well as DSD. The low-pass filter uses HDAM circuitry, while the output buffer and the current-feedback headphone amplifier use discrete HDAM SA2 modules. The power transformer is toroidal, analog and digital circuits have separate rectifiers, and the chassis has an extra double-layer metal plate of 2 x 1 mm. Recordable and rewritable discs work in the drive, including those carrying MP3 or WMA files, but not Super Audio CD. HEOS streaming covers Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Deezer, Amazon Music, Pandora and TuneIn, with AirPlay 2 and Roon Tested status. Bluetooth 5.4 is included, and the display is a 3-line OLED. Program play stores up to 25 tracks, and Marantz gives a five-year warranty.
Pairing
Through the variable output a power amplifier can be driven directly, and television audio arrives over one HDMI ARC cable. D-Bus, RS232, IP control and a flasher input support integration with a Marantz amplifier and control systems.
Alternatives
The Marantz CD 60 is a lower-priced disc player in the current range that omits HEOS streaming and HDMI.
