The SA-10 is a Super Audio CD and CD player from Marantz that doubles as a USB DAC, and the brand places it in its Reference range. It is now an archived model on the Marantz US site, where it was listed at USD 7,499. Colour options were Gold, Silver, Black and Silver-Gold, depending on region.
Key specs that matter
With SACD the player covers 2 Hz to 100 kHz, or 2 Hz to 60 kHz within 3 dB, from a 1-bit DSD signal at 2.8224 MHz. Marantz rates SACD playback at 112 dB signal to noise and 109 dB dynamic range across the audible band. For 16-bit CD at 44.1 kHz the figures are 2 Hz to 20 kHz within 1 dB, 104 dB signal to noise, 98 dB dynamic range and 100 dB channel separation. Unbalanced output level is 2.4 V with SACD and 2.0 V with CD into 10 kohm, and XLR balanced outputs are also fitted. The rear USB-B input runs in asynchronous mode and accepts PCM up to 384 kHz and 32 bit, plus DSD 2.8, 5.6 and 11.2 MHz via DoP. The chassis measures 440 x 419 x 127 mm and weighs 18.4 kg, and power use is 50 W, falling to 0.3 W on standby.
Engineering and use context
No commercial DAC chip is used - the SA-10 relies on a proprietary Marantz conversion scheme in two parts. The Stream stage upsamples incoming PCM and converts it to DSD using custom filtering and DSP-based noise shaping, and the Conversion stage turns that DSD into an analogue signal. Selectable filters are available for CD and for DAC mode. Discs are read by the SACDM-3 transport, a metal mechanism that Marantz built for accurate real-time reading. A toroidal transformer powers the unit, and analogue and digital circuits get their own rectifiers. The chassis is copper plated, closed by a 5 mm aluminium top cover and stiffened by an extra metal plate. HDAM modules act as output buffers, and the headphone amplifier combines HDAM-SA2 with current feedback buffering to deliver up to 50 mW into 32 ohm. Data discs with DSD files up to 5.6 MHz, WAV and ALAC up to 192 kHz can also be played.
Pairing
Both XLR and RCA analogue outputs are present, so the SA-10 connects to balanced or single-ended amplifier inputs alike. Coaxial and optical inputs accept digital sources such as a TV or network streamer, and the USB-B port connects a computer. Coaxial and optical outputs carry CD data to a recorder. The RC004PMSA remote controls the player and a matching Marantz amplifier.
Alternatives
The Marantz SACD 10 is a later Reference SACD player from the same brand, built around the SACDM-3 transport.
