The Varro PS250 is the smallest model in the ELAC Varro subwoofer collection, announced in March 2023. Varro spans seven models in three tiers - the PS250, PS350 and PS500 with 10, 12 and 15 inch drivers, the single-driver RS500 and RS700 Reference models, and the DS1000 and DS1200 Dual Reference pair. The PS250 carries the part number PS250-BK, is finished in satin black and is priced at USD 699.

Key specs that matter

A front-firing 10 inch woofer with a treated paper cone and a 2 inch voice coil works in a bass reflex enclosure. The BASH amplifier delivers 250 W RMS and 500 W peak into 4 ohm. Measured in anechoic conditions the response runs from 27 Hz to 150 Hz, and ELAC gives 24 Hz to 150 Hz as the in-room figure. Maximum output is 107 dB SPL at 1 m, again anechoic. The low-pass filter covers 40 Hz to 150 Hz. The cabinet is 381 mm tall, 360 mm wide and 360 mm deep, and it weighs 16.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

The walls of the enclosure are 30 mm MDF with internal bracing, which the Varro range uses to reduce flexing and resonance of the panels, and the thickness rises to 36 mm on the Dual Reference models. Signal processing runs on two 28-bit DSP chips clocked by a 147 MHz master oscillator, which ELAC says keeps latency low. BASH amplification varies the supply rail with the signal, so the output stage draws only the voltage the music needs at any moment and keeps heat down. Settings are adjusted through the ELAC SUB Control 3.0 app for iOS and Android, which connects over Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. A USB port on the back is reserved for firmware updates, and there is a 12 V trigger input. A grille, a mains cord and a set of spikes are packed with it.

Pairing

Two input types are provided - line-level RCA for the subwoofer or preamp output of an AV receiver or stereo processor, and speaker-level terminals for integrated amplifiers that lack a dedicated sub output. With its wide low-pass range, the PS250 can sit under small bookshelf speakers that roll off early as well as under larger towers that only need help in the lowest octave. In a home cinema the trigger input allows the receiver to power it up at the same moment as the other components. Owners who need AirX2 wireless reception or balanced XLR inputs have to move up to the Reference and Dual Reference tiers, which add both.
