The Muro SUB2010 is the smaller of the two slim powered subwoofers in the ELAC Muro series, sold next to the 10-inch SUB2020. Its very thin cabinet can stand flat against a wall or slide beneath a couch, and ELAC America lists it at USD 799 in a choice of black or white.

Key specs that matter

A single 8-inch woofer with a doped paper cone is driven by a BASH amplifier rated at 125 W RMS and 250 W peak. ELAC quotes a frequency response of 38 to 150 Hz and a variable low-pass filter that can be set anywhere from 50 to 150 Hz. The enclosure measures 122 x 386 x 361 mm and weighs 7.8 kg. Connections are left, right and LFE line inputs, and a receiver for the ELAC AirX2 wireless transmitter is built in, although the transmitter itself is bought separately. In standby the unit draws 0.5 W. Cabinets are wrapped in black or white vinyl, and the metal grille comes in black or grey.

Engineering and use context

ELAC left the traditional analog knobs off this model. Every adjustment is made over Bluetooth Low Energy through the ELAC SUB Control 2.0 app for iOS and Android, which covers volume, the low-pass point, phase, delay, listening presets and power settings, and the same app can address several ELAC subwoofers at once. Without dials on the back, the rear of the box can sit close to a wall without blocking access to any control. The chassis works upright or lying on its side - a set of horizontal feet and wall mount brackets are packed with it - so the same unit can fill a narrow gap beside a cabinet, lie under a sofa or hang on a wall. The BASH output stage is a tracking amplifier design, a topology ELAC uses to fit substantial power into a light, thin enclosure. If the optional AirX2 transmitter is plugged into the sub output of a receiver, only a mains lead has to reach the subwoofer, which frees it from the position of the electronics.

Pairing

Its rated extension and crossover range suit small bookshelf, on-wall or soundbar-style front speakers in a TV system, where the SUB2010 handles the octaves those speakers leave out. For home cinema, one RCA lead runs from the receiver's subwoofer jack to the LFE socket, and a stereo integrated amplifier lacking a sub jack can drive the left and right inputs from its variable pre-outs.

The ELAC Muro SUB2020 keeps the same slim format but steps up to a 10-inch polypropylene cone and twice the RMS rating of BASH power.
