The Varro SUB2070.2 is an active subwoofer from ELAC, the German loudspeaker maker based in Kiel. It revives the Sub 2070, a design the company introduced about a decade earlier, which was built as a plain cube with heavy top and bottom panels finished in high gloss lacquer. The new version keeps that cube form and fits it with the current generation of amplifier and control electronics taken from the Varro subwoofer series. The UK price is GBP 1,599, while the US list price is USD 2,998.98.
Key specs that matter
Two 250 mm drivers with AS cones sit in a sealed cabinet, mounted on opposite faces in an impulse-compensating push-push arrangement. The built-in amplifier uses BASH tracking and is rated at 600 W maximum, with a full load consumption of 900 W and 1 W in standby. ELAC gives a frequency range of 18 to 180 Hz. Its low-pass point is continuously adjustable from 40 to 150 Hz. Inputs comprise two line-level RCA channels with 70 mV sensitivity and 20 kOhm impedance, plus three speaker-level terminals. The enclosure measures 475 mm high, 360 mm wide and 385 mm deep, and the unit weighs 32.0 kg. It comes in gloss black or gloss white.
Engineering and use context
Placing the two drivers face to face on opposing panels means that their reaction forces act in opposite directions and largely cancel, so the heavy cabinet transmits less movement to the floor and to nearby furniture. Because the enclosure is closed, air turbulence from a vent at high excursion does not arise. BASH tracking is a design in which the supply rail voltage follows the signal, giving large voltage swing and extra headroom for short bursts while running cooler at low levels than a conventional linear stage. Setup and adjustment are handled through the ELAC Sub Control 3.0 app for iOS and Android, which gives access to 16 internal parametric filters as well as level, crossover and phase settings. A built-in wireless receiver accepts the signal from the optional ELAC AirX2 transmitter, which removes the need for a long interconnect from the amplifier to the subwoofer position.
Pairing
The line inputs suit the LFE or subwoofer output of an AV receiver or a preamplifier with a bass management output, and the adjustable filter lets the unit be matched to main speakers whose low end ends anywhere within the filter range. The speaker-level terminals allow connection to a stereo amplifier that has no dedicated subwoofer output, picking up the feed alongside the main speaker cables.
Alternatives
Within the same Varro family, ELAC also offers the Varro DS1200-GB as another powered subwoofer option.
