The Varro PS350-BK is the middle model of the entry PS range in ELAC's Varro subwoofer family, placed between the 10-inch PS250-BK and the 15-inch PS500-BK. The Varro line reached the market in March 2023, and this 12-inch model was priced at EUR 849 in Europe and USD 799.98 for the US market. ELAC says the name Varro comes from a Latin word for durable and strong.
Key specs that matter
A 12-inch treated paper cone sits in a ported box, fed by BASH electronics rated at 350 W RMS into 4 ohm and 700 W peak. In anechoic measurement the response runs from 24 to 150 Hz, while in a typical room ELAC expects extension to 21 Hz. Peak output reaches 108 dB SPL at 1 m. Its low-pass filter runs between 40 and 150 Hz. The cabinet is 437 mm high, 416 mm wide and 418 mm deep and weighs 21.8 kg, finished in black vinyl. In standby the draw is under 0.5 W.
Engineering and use context
Cabinet walls are 30 mm MDF with internal cross-bracing intended to keep panel resonances down, and the woofer has a 2-inch voice coil. A port tunes the box, which is the PS range's way of reaching low frequencies with a single paper driver and moderate amplifier power, where the sealed Reference models rely on stiffer cones and more wattage. The rear panel is kept simple - a volume control, RCA line inputs, a factory reset button and a USB port for firmware files. Everything else is done in the ELAC Sub Control 3.0 app via Bluetooth LE, including crossover, phase, delay and presets, and one app can manage several subwoofers. Out of the box the unit is set to 75 percent volume, a 70 Hz low-pass at 12 dB per octave and the Music preset. Four spikes are supplied for carpeted floors, and ELAC advises leaving them off on wood or tile unless spike discs are used. A grille and a power cord complete the contents. Firmware updates are loaded from a FAT32 USB flash drive placed in the rear port, and the process starts on its own at power-up. Holding the reset button for 10 to 15 seconds returns the unit to factory settings.
Pairing
With RCA line inputs only, the PS350-BK takes the subwoofer signal of a surround receiver through one cable, or the variable pre-outs of a stereo amplifier through two. Speaker level terminals are absent, which means a power amplifier or integrated model without pre-outs is not a direct match. These figures fit bookshelf or mid-size floorstanding speakers in rooms of around 20 m2.
